Accel 10w40 (walmart) question

I see walmart sells Accel 10w40 with an SE rating. I need an oil with higher ZDDP for my flat tappet engine. The label says for cars 1988 and older. I have a 70's dodge 318. Would this oil be a good choice ? or would I be better off with say Valvoline VR1 to get the higher ZDDP levels.
For that natter I really am not sure of what the ZDDP levels are for an oil rated SE.

I'd go with a name-brand product as previously suggested. Some weights of Accel Oil have had advisory's from PQI America; so mainstream products like Walmart's SuperTech (and above) are preferred.

No way Id run SAE SE garbage. It's not blended to be useful to you. It's to line Walmart's pockets by selling garbage to idiots. Don't be one of them.

If you truly need more ZDDP than an oil,like defy or the Walmart SuperTech 15w40 can supply, call it 1200 ppm, I'd dope some redline breakin additive or one of the other zddp replacements into supertech oil. Delo products (chevron made HDEOs) are also made to an attractive price point and offer a high zddp 10w30.

Leave the garbage for lawn mowers and idiots.

The defy 10w40 is a much better choice, Accel isn't worthy of going into an engine.

A 318? Unless it's the world's fastest 318 with a hi-lift solid cam, you can run any off the shelf conventional 10w30 or synthetic and be fine. Defy is fine if you're paranoid. Stay with dino unless you need to oil your driveway.

I wouldn't put Accel in a lawnmower. Try some sort of HDEO 10w30, like Rotella T or maybe even Mobil 1 High Mileage.

Remember, even in the SN era, 40-tw oils are allowed to have more ZDDP than the lighter stuff. Therefore, no need to use garbage Accel.

The only real use for that Accel 10w40 is in Honda manual transmissions.

VR1 is a better choice, as is Rotella T6.

According to that, the 10W-40 is SN.

Thanks for the information. Do you happen to have links to spec sheets for QS Defy and Walmart SuperTech Synthetic 10w30 or 15w40 stuff ?

I was sure that there were better refined oils than Accel. But reading the label "for 1988 and older" caught my eye. Thanks guys for looking out for my engine.

My Walmart doesn't carry the Accel 10w40 any more. It was actually SF rated and has 1100 ppm zinc. It is made by Warren. The same folks that make SuperTech (in certain areas). Walmart also sells an Accel 10w30. It is 10 cents cheaper than the Super Tech 10w30 and I would wager it is exactly the same product in a black bottle versus a blue bottle.
