What is the purpose of the thin "extra" plate on the inlet to the Ac Delco filters, which I'm seeing looks like it is being discontinued?

As with many things here, the purpose of outer auxiliary plate on Champ Labs filters been discussed often. "Champ has said" it's to make filter installation easier in hard to reach, hard to see filter locations. That as opposed to the non-beveled protruding thread boss it would be without the plate being there. The idea being, less exactitude finding and installing on the engine block mounting stud. If you want to see what it would look like without the plate, look at a current Fram 7317 or 6607 base plate.

I had not seen where it's being discontinued. Still see that design regularly posted here.

Inverted thread Boss...interesting idea.

The PF63s I see in the store now at a new Auto Zone no longer have this extra thin plate. Although at Wal Mart, which may be older stock, still have it.

Yeah, some ACDelco don't use the auxiliary plate, and some never have. It's been seen most often on the Champ Labs ecore (nylon core) filters. Afaik, that's where the explanation for its use originated. I suppose it could go away, but I'd be surprised if it completely does.

I always thought it was for aesthetics. Some baseplates give off a low quality look regardless of the filter quality.

It’s to make the filter easier to install-but, as we’ve seen, First Brands isn’t in the filter business to give anything away…

The extra outer plate has been used on ecores since intro, long FB bought Champ. So, I don't know about how it would be connected to them. If the implication is it could go away because it would make it less expensive to produce, I guess it could. But I would find it even more surprising if they just eliminated the ecore outer plate and left the main plate as is. If they make the baseplate similar to other Champ filters that never used it, not sure there would be much if any savings there. At this point, imo no sense in speculating because mention of one ACDelco application anecdote.
