Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid has the same viscosity as the now obsolete-spec Dexron III-H, but it does not have the same chemical signature as the Dexron III-H.
Understood; they're not the same. I guess their sameness is a very common misconception. Once an idea takes hold, it often persists, particularly when it originates with an "official" source (GM TechLInk, in this case). Most recent mention on this site seems to be here:
Dexron IIIH which GM sells as Manual Transmission Fluid.

Mr Clinebarger is one of our transmission experts here and has a lot experience in rebuilding with a comprehensive knowledge of transmission operation. so I would assume his (and other's) information was based, too, on the GM bulletins. So we should NOT fault him or other's for repeating something GM themselves publicly stated.

I think we have to clarify this topic in terms of MTF/Dexron History: When GM came into the market with a manual transmission that required an ~7.3 cSt fluid (A/C Delco 10953477), that fluid may well have been very similar to a Dexron III-H fluid but as of least the last say 12 years (?) or so, I have had this fluid analyzed at least three times in the intervening years and it has always shown a different chemical signature than the Dexron-III series. with some slight tweaking in the intervening years. From the first two analyses, which were non-ND restricted, the main changes were a bump in the AW components chemistry and the Friction Modifier chemistry over any Dexron-III chemistries.

Here is another transmission oil.
