Thanks for the follow up. It's not that I wouldn't believe you, rather anyone for that matter. If it's true, it's true. It makes no sense why they spend the money to do so.

Ester is indeed a "synthetic" component to High Mileage oils that provides the seal conditioning, therefore it's easy to understand why they could claim that it has been a syn blend from day 1.

Most of the public indeed has no idea about synthetic, but they may know that there are rumors (myths) on when NOT to use it. It seems logical that Valv would want to keep their distance from such myths - it worked

As competition tries to outdo each other, they continue to apply the "syn/synblend" label wherever they can.

I can't find the threads with links to the MSDS sheets, but I have in fact verified that they state "PAO" as a percentage of the base oil. Whether or not you choose to believe me/us is your choice...

I was able to verify the current (non-2002 version) of MaxLife's (5w30) MSDS and the PAO reference is long gone, 80-90% hydrotreated petroleum distillates:

I searched on the msds number, 64742-54-7, and it's a severely hydrotreated petroleum oil. It didn't show any other numbers for it's base oil, so I'm wondering if it's a blend or just 80-90% group 3. Don't touch it, it contains arsenic!

My understanding is that 64742-54-7 can be Group II or Group III. I believe Durablend is that and the Group I CAS #. The interesting thing is there is more Group I in the 20w50 and 10w30 compared to 5w30 and 10w40. So they obviously must have used Group II oil to help those with a wider viscosity spread. Yeah, it may say 80-90% for that CAS #, but Valvoline techs always tell me that Durablend is 30% synthetic, so 50-60% must be Group II.
