what are some american oils that meet a5/b5 rating of a 5w20 synthetic oil?..other then red line.iam looking for my neighbor.they have a new 2011 kia optima 2.4l gas direct injected engine.

M1 meets the A5/B5-04 spec.. I do not know who makes the A5/B5-08 spec..

A5/B5-08 requires a HTHS viscosity between 2.9 and 3.5. Most 20 weight oils can't achieve this value. All three Mobil 1 20 weights, Pennzoil Ultra 5W20, and Quaker State Ultimate Durability AG 5W20 all fail to meet this requirement. Red Line 0W20 doesn't meet this requirement, but Red Line 5W20 does.

I believe PP meets the A5 spec in 5w30 viscosity. It appears to me that A5 is a 'long life' spec if you check the ACEA web page. I have not found any 5w-20 products that meet it. (that is to say "fully qualified spec" as opposed to "meets the spec" of.) I have been using NAPA synthatic 5w-20 SM in my 2011 Sonata 2.4l GDI engine.The manual calls for 5w-20 or 5w30 either SM or SN.FWIW-Oldtommy

Since 20-weights are mostly formulated for good fuel economy, making one with a 30-weight HTHS would be counterproductive. I wonder what oil your neighbor would get from the Kia dealer if he went in to buy some. It may be easier to put a light 30-weight in it.

when he gets home,i will look in his manual to see what kia says...i know red line meets it but he is not a gearhead, as we are here,to pay that much for oil.

A good resource for understanding ACEA requirements can be found at the www.lubrizol.com web site. Look for 'european engine oils' and all the info is there. It appears that an xw-20 oil can not be rated A5 due to the HT/HS requirement. Sorry i can't give you a link. FWIW-Oldtommy

i understand about the acea...iam asking what american 5w20 oils meet that if any? my guess is not any unless you go to a 5w30 then there are plenty..i have the link and the realative performance graph which is wonderful...if red line can do it, then you would think american oils can...red line ,a5/b5 hths 3.4,is a very special oil and well formulated no other companies can produce while subscribing to the api standards...i will prob suggest to my neighbor mobil 1 extended performance full synthetic 5w20 oil(they use the trimer moly made by infineum) which is acea a1,hths 2.7 and api sn,gf5...will prob give him good protection.

Looking at 1 or 2 oil spec's and not the whole package can be very misleading.
Red Line 5W-20 is an old formulation that predates the development of Red Line's 0W-XX range of oils by a few years.
With it's HTHS vis of 3.3cP it is not suitable for any 20wt street application and because of it's very low 145 VI is not ideal for any 30wt application either.

Depending on your viscosity requirements both Red Line 0W-20 and 0w30
are more suitable high performance street oils although neither are A5 classified.

it requires ACEA A1 oil and there are alot of them..i was wanting to use an upgrade to the a1 spec...i decided to suggest to neighbor mobil 1 fully synthetic extended performance 5w20.
