My wife and I went on another day trip today and visited the Wood Brothers racing museum located in the tiny town of Stuart, Va. About 90 minutes from where I live in N.C. and about 20 miles South of the Blue Ridge Parkway. When we entered the front doors I saw several people in the office and asked where to pay for the museum tour and they said there was no fee, and to just walk around and enjoy ourselves. And we did and what a treat! We meandered through the displays, cars, trophy’s, race engines on stands, and hundreds of photographs all with helpful written explanations and history of what we were looking at. If you’re ever in SW Virginia drop in and you’ll be treated like family! My favorites were David Pearsons number 21 1972 Mercury with the 429 engine. Pearson won 43 races for the Wood Brothers. In the third pic I took a closeup pic of the dash of his car to show the sticks of gum he had duct taped to the dash and of the cigarette lighter he had them install for him. Try that today! Tiny Lunds 63 Ford that he won the Daytona 500 in and Marvin Panch’s 1961 Ford Galaxie. A couple that Bill Elliott drove and one that AJ Foyt drove and another that Dan Gurney drove and Ryan Blakey’s Ford from a couple of years ago.
On display were a couple of hand built racing carburetor’s built from a single block of billet aluminum and were completely functional. Not too shabby for a couple of guys from the Blue Ridge mountains of SW Virginia!
