My wife and I went on another day trip today and visited the Wood Brothers racing museum located in the tiny town of Stuart, Va. About 90 minutes from where I live in N.C. and about 20 miles South of the Blue Ridge Parkway. When we entered the front doors I saw several people in the office and asked where to pay for the museum tour and they said there was no fee, and to just walk around and enjoy ourselves. And we did and what a treat! We meandered through the displays, cars, trophy’s, race engines on stands, and hundreds of photographs all with helpful written explanations and history of what we were looking at. If you’re ever in SW Virginia drop in and you’ll be treated like family! My favorites were David Pearsons number 21 1972 Mercury with the 429 engine. Pearson won 43 races for the Wood Brothers. In the third pic I took a closeup pic of the dash of his car to show the sticks of gum he had duct taped to the dash and of the cigarette lighter he had them install for him. Try that today! Tiny Lunds 63 Ford that he won the Daytona 500 in and Marvin Panch’s 1961 Ford Galaxie. A couple that Bill Elliott drove and one that AJ Foyt drove and another that Dan Gurney drove and Ryan Blakey’s Ford from a couple of years ago.
On display were a couple of hand built racing carburetor’s built from a single block of billet aluminum and were completely functional. Not too shabby for a couple of guys from the Blue Ridge mountains of SW Virginia!

Hallowed halls indeed.
The entire sport of NASCAR has been improved by the Wood Brothers organization. Heck, all of motorsports has reaped the benefits from their innovation.

Sure sounds like a great visit. My wife and I drove out to Bristol and S Carolina a few weeks ago. I wish we would have known about this shop/museum tour you experienced. Would have enjoyed for sure.

All this coming from Chevy gey! 😀

Awesome museum visit! Love the free admission and family-like treatment.
A co-worker of mine - ok manager haha - told me about this place too. She said the same thing, that the staff were super nice and welcoming. I'm planning on going with my wife soon. Looks like they're only open on weekdays so we'll have to do some adjusting to make that work. Cool place.

By the way, the place linked below - 'Rare Rides' - is neat to visit too. Also in NC not far from Greensboro where we reside. They're not a museum, they sell the cars they have. But they let you look around and are friendly and have some pretty sweet rides there. No car sales tactic either, we just looked around. :)
