A tale of two lifters

Christmas Day, 1979. I'm driving out to a friend's farm for Christmas dinner. I stop at a light, still in the city, and hear the 'tick tick tick' so common to small-block Chevys in those days. There's a Chevy truck in the next lane, stopped at the same light, and I think 'Those 350s always do that'. But at the next light I'm alone, and the same noise is still there. Oh oh, it must be coming from my car (a '68 Impala with a 307, with 149,000 miles on the clock).

Over the next few months I add various herpetological lubricants, all to no avail - the ticking persists.

The next summer a much more mechanically-talented friend helps me do the work. The car's now up to 160,000 miles. We take off the intake manifold, loosen up the rocker arms, pull the pushrods, and start to pull the lifters. He looks at the first one, and says "No way - I don't think that's supposed to be like that!" We pull a 2nd one, and I see what he means.





He had bought a '68 Pontiac for the drivetrain, and was going to rebuild the 327 for a hotrod anyway, so sold me the lifters for a really good price.

I had a Chilton's which said to tighten down the rocker arms until the lash in the pushrods was gone. I interpreted this to mean that the pushrods had to be so tight that they couldn't be rotated. The engine would barely turn over. We broke for supper, and I realized that 'lash' meant up and down movement, and that the pushrods were likely way too tight. I backed them way off, and the engine started fine and ran well.

The photos are of the best and worst of the 16 lifters. Several others had worn case hardening, but only the 'shorty' had worn right through.
 
Wow-it didn't wear the cam lobe off?? I had a Buick 350 & a Chevy 305 that wore cam lobes off back in the day, and the lifters didn't look that bad. That's some "quality" GM hardening work!
 
So did it eat the cam after the lifter swap? On SBC I always do both at once. Otherwise you just do it twice.
 
I had a 68 impala 4 dr with the 6 thru the bumper taillights and 307 tags. I LOVED that car! beautiful lines and pure simplicity. I put 2 engines in it the second a 454 from a tow truck. Total sleeper car

The way I set the lifters was to remove the valve cover and while it is running fast idle back out the rocker nut till it clicked then turn it back in 1/4 to 1/2 a turn past when it stops clicking.

Great car!

The cam was likely shot, but the engine had a worse issue - it was burning a lot of oil by then, so two years later I swapped in a used 327 out of a '69.

Great car!

Mine was the 2-door fastback, red with a black interior, and the 2-speed Powerglide. The 454 would have been quite a thing! I really liked the side-marker lights denoting the engine size. These photos are from '79:


 
I had a 396 in a shortbed chevy 1/2 ton that would punch pushrods through stamped rocker arms way too often.

my friend had a 307 in a 70 el camino that liked to do that.

No, not at all. One of the original lifters wore through and started to tick @ 149,000 miles. I replaced all 16, which exhibited varying degrees of wear, with used lifters. The photos are of the worst and best of the original lifters.

Incidental to this, when installing the used lifters, I tightened them down too much such that the engine would barely turn over. I backed off on the tension, and the engine started fine and ran well (other than an unrelated and pre-existing thirst for oil) on the 'new' lifters out of the 327.

The wear on the original lifters may have been for any number of reasons, old age and high mileage being two.

It looks to me as though you had either a very badly manufactured (or designed) engine, or poor oil. I've never encountered that sort of failure, even at higher mileage.

Chevy had a rep in the 70's for wiping cams, especially on 305's. I don't think the 307's were immune over the years either. A completely different era to us & our expectations!

I wish I'd pulled the cam out of the tired old 307 when I swapped engines.

I remember the soft-cam problems with the 305 in the '80s.

I bought the car in April 1978 at 119,000 miles. I don't know how it was serviced before that, but thereafter I ran Quaker State 10w30 conventional with a Fram filter, and changed both out @ 2000 mile intervals.

The conventional 10w30 did not make for nice winter starts - I remember forgetting to plug in the block heater one night, and starting the car @ -38 C. It cranked very slowly, coughed, and then started on high idle. The engine rattled away, and the oil light seemed to take an eternity (5 seconds?) to go out. A 5w30 or a synthetic would have helped a lot. That one episode could not have helped the cam.

An oil analysis might have clued me in.
