I couldn't find any forum dedicated to help and forum rules, so I'm posting here.

Is there any way to track the threads you were posting in? I did not see any way to request the system to notify the user.

Apparently the system does not allow to edit posts. Is that so?

Thanks,

Ira

Go to any post you have made. Note you member number, Labman, 1158. Click on search at the top of the page. Scroll down to search on a member. Put your number in, and it comes back with a list of all your posts. After 98 of them, I am learning a little.

At the top of any post, there are some inscrutable icons. Click on the little note pad and pencil soon after your own post, and you can go back and make changes. Very good for oops, oh yeah, etc.

The quotes to the right of it enable you to quote somebody else's post to disagree or reinforce.

Thanks Labman, "inscrutable" is the word.

Rugerman1, I have read the rules; they mostly told me what I can not do... (I didn't really plan on anything like that nor before nor after reading them; note: not trying to be extra-smart on purpose, just stunned by the warm welcome I'm getting so far; if inexperienced new people with no tech background are not wanted on this site, that should be listed in the rules). I meant a Forum, smth. like "Rules, help for newbies and forum suggestions".

Can I be notified by email if someone responds to my topic?
If you create a new topic, you have the option of receiving an email notification every time someone posts a reply to your topic. Just check the email notification box when creating a new topic, if you want to use this feature. Only registered members can use this feature.

Call me stupid, but I still don't see which button to push and where it's at.
For you, oldtimers it must be ABC, for me it's all Chinese.

ok, look below this post--click "NEW TOPIC"

and then on the next screen, scroll down, on the lower left, beneath the canadian flag gremlin, there's a checkbox for e-mail notification.

I appreciate the directions. I finally found it.
I didn't realize it doesn't apply to the regular posts.
Isn't it hard to have a discussion if nobody except the thread starter knows what's happening?..

Good point on the discussion. What I find makes it hard to follow a discussion is when somebody starts a new topic and refers back to the old one. You end up with parts of the same discussion scattered in several threads. When you start a new topic, you may get emailed notice of postings to it, but still not to the original, which some may stick to.

I keep http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_daily in whatever* you call the bar at the top where I can click on it. I then scroll down through everything looking for threads I am interested in until I start seeing old stuff. I originally started in the filter area, but found out there was a lot of other interesting stuff here.

*I don't remember because I have gone through operating systems and browsers like some of you go through brands and types of oil. At least with Linux, I am untroubled with all the viruses and worms except for all the trash I get from people that get viruses in their Outlook. It is harmless to me, except for the time to delete it.

Wow, we ARE having a discussion, of some sort at least. I checked your link, and I guess this is the only way to keep up with new posts. I think lack of e-mail notification by default leads to people "loosing" their posts and it's easier to say forget it. (The 1st time it took me 20 minutes to find one of mine).
As "much" as I know about oils and the rest, my best bet is probably just read and hope that other folks will bring up what I want to know. (I doubt I'll do just that.)
For now, I copied the thread links in a word file; this way I can keep track of where I've been. I have zero memory for titles on this board so far, everything pretty much sounds the same to me. Boy, I must have been lucky before -- my "home" board has every imaginable option, very functional. My only complaint when I joined was that they use(d) dark background for the picture galleries (hurts my eyes), but the solution is simple -- there's no overwhelming need to go there.
I don't understand people who use Outlook either. It's "uncustomizeable" and a known virus-collector. I run OLD Eudora (copyrighted '91-97, shareware now), no htmls, just plain old text; I even choose 16-bit installation, 'cause I don't like frozen top of the message (as in 32-bit); I can arrange and shape in/out box as I please; no fifty billion different boxes (unless I want to), in 2 that I keep open side by side it shows me all mail and its status. Few people agree with me, but I'm a Eudora fan. I've heard a lot of good things about Linux; but didn't get around to try it. We even have a CD with Red Hat L. somewhere around the house.
Anyway, thanks for being friendly. I quit smoking recently and sometimes get touchy for almost no reason.

Ma-fia, feel free to post questions in the General section, or you can contact me directly if you need any help. If you click on my name to the upper left of my post, you canthen click either the "email" or "send new PM" icons. Feel free to contact me with any questions, Joe

Glad to see you are getting around!

I think it's a delicate balance of training and experience. To check my threads, once or thrice a day I scan the threads of interest, new threads, etc. It usually doesn't take me 20 minutes to find even the most aged threads (with no activity on page 5 or something)

Hey, I used to use Eudora, thought it was OK yet super clunky, but actually I admit I like the latest Outlook (not Express) and have it somewhat customized (exactly home = work).

Have a great Saturday and sorry I didn't jump in earlier to help.

If you've lost track of a thread you've posted in, you can check your recent posts.
Just click on your name at the bottom of the main forum page where it lists recent visitors, then click on "view recent posts"
This will show your last 50 posts. Unless you post as often as Patman

this should show you the topic you're looking for.

One feature I wish this board had is a spell checker. But since it doesn't I usually go to spellcheck.net and just copy/paste my post there and fix all the typos. That way I don't have to use the edit function so often

We just got a new computer with windowXP (we had been using Windows 95) and we have to do something about the Outlook. My son says he'll probably put Eudora on it. anyone have suggestion on what version of that is best?

I understand getting touchy for no reason. I'm the mother of two teen aged boys. I see touchy all the time and am often that way myself.

These's a great bunch of folks here at BITOG. I know almost nothing about oil, but I come here to discuss the rest of life with technical minded people, guys who know the difference between wenches and pliers.

The mods

do a great job of keeping the place civil as well as keeping the software running smoothly.

Wow, thanks everybody. As I said, I get funny for no reason. (God bless my spouse.

I might take you up on the offer, Joe!

Pablo, you're of course right, it's a matter of experience. And technical knowledge helps, too! It seems to me that it's mostly about... oil around here.
Also found out that K&N is not the way to go. Oh well, the idea sounded so nice. But paper be it.

Re: Eudora
Last thing I downloaded is Eudora Light ver.3.0.3. The most beautiful feature about this program is that I do not have to reconfigure it when I format the system drive and reinstall everything from scratch: I save all Eudora files in a dedicated folder on my E: drive (where I keep short installer .exe's, settings info and such) and when I'm done installing Win., I install Eudora and then simply copy the saved files over; very easy, since it has its own folder. This way all the paths are correct, and I have all my e-mails and settings back with no effort at all. Also, one can make an unlimited number of installations (re-naming the main folder and saving shortcut on the desktop before making the next installation); I have 2 mailboxes, so I have a separate installation for each one.
(Dewlanna, if you decide you want Eudora and can't find the download on the web, I can e-mail it to you).
