I was wondering how do you start the car; do you just tap at the start button or you holding on it, lets say a whole second before you release the button

I do the latter; is that the wrong way of doing it!??

perhaps i'm doing it that way because i'm old school

what's your take?

Just depress the button fully and let it go, no reason to hold it.

I had a 2018 Chevy Duramax that still had an old school key, but I found that it was a key only in appearance. All you had to do is turn the key quickly to the start position and let it go, just a quick bump. The computer finished cranking and shut the starter off when the sensors told the computer the engine was running > a certain RPMs. It was a faux key.

Nope, you’re doing it right. Or at least that’s the way it works on my 2017 Chevy SS Sedan, albeit the brake pedal has to be held during start-up.
I generally start the car from the fob, or from my Chevy app while I’m still indoors. Then you absolutely have to hold the button in for 1.x second(s) to take it from ‘remote start’ to full-function. I’m sure glad you didn’t ask about Bluetooth, because after 6 years, I still haven’t figured it out.

I just push it and let it go. So maybe a half second push? It seems that once you push the button the "computer" takes over and does what it does to start the car. Doesn't matter how long you hold in the button.

Yep, GM started this in the early 00's

Push the button down for a split second and listen for the car to turn over . About the same amount as turning a key
that's what i've been doing, just like in old days with a key

but i've seen on many YT videos, people just tap it, just like opening an app on your phone

And that's all that's needed. Pressing the button produces just a binary command that executes engine start - it'll automatically crank the starter for as long as needed after that. It's not like old school ignition key where you had to keep the key turned for the starter to keep cranking.

Alas, there is probably no harm done if you choose to hold the Start button for longer. The system will just ignore it.

single press foot off brake = accessory mode (some are two presses no brake to get to acc)
single press foot on brake = start-run.

Just like modern key start...just a switch like the button...it's automatic.

My 2010 Escape has a real key but the computer controls the starting. You just bump the key to start for a moment and it does the rest. No need to hold it like on older vehicles.
