Sorry, I haven't been following the Mobil 1 Group III controversy lately. Is SL rated Mobil 1 a proper full synthetic? I was in an Atlantic Superstore a few days ago and was browsing their automotive section. I noticed they have a fair bit of 5w30 and 10w30 SL rated Mobil 1 for $8.09 a quart! That's cheaper than Walmart or Canadian Tire, and only 10 cent per quart more than Maxlife synthetic.

A short answer. I susupect that the SL Mobil 1 is PAO based. But if where me I would throw an coin up let the flip decide between it and the Maxlife. It would also depend on the application.
I would say it it is the real deal synthetic. All this controversy over mobil 1 being group III, seems to have sprouted after the Hurricane Katrina incident. To my knowledge, SL is going back to before the year 2000.
I think API SL was 2002 thru 2004. SM came out around November 2004, I believe.
Just curious, how does a used oil analysis indicate that an oil is PAO?

Exxon-Mobil (and all other oil companies) will of course be tight lipped about their formulas. So far, it has only been a rumor (albeit a strong rumor on this website) that Mobil 1 is no longer a PAO based motor oil and now Group III based.
So far everything has been speculation based on everything from used oil analysis, VOA's, price difference between PAO and Group III's. Now, I'm not trying to defend Exxon-Mobil. I, too, would like to know if in fact the formulation has changed to a mostly Group III base oil. Again, please point us in the direction of "lots of proof that Mobil 1 is now group III"?

If you look at my used oil analysis, things started going south right after my stash of M1 was gone and a restocked up with the newest SM formulation. It's at this point that my lead has been elevated. At first I figured it might be some cleaning effect of the new formulation. When I shared my opinion that M1 has changed back in '05 I was quickly dismissed. Now we see the group III info and the vague info provided by XOM.
