I used to think Pennzoil > QS > Shell (albeit slightly) but after looking at some Spec Sheets, I'm starting to suspect the opposite. Could it be that we are simply paying for the marketing on the QS and an even greater amount of marketing on the Pennzoil?
For example in the 5w30s:

Quaker State Synthetic 58.50@40c 10.53@100c 172 VI
PP 57.50@40c 10.30@100c 169 VI
Looking at the 40c and 100c viscosities, I would be willing to bet Formula Shell Syn's VI is higher than Quaker State Synthetic and PP
Findings in 5w20 are similar:
