A new suspicion about the SOPUS lineup

I used to think Pennzoil > QS > Shell (albeit slightly) but after looking at some Spec Sheets, I'm starting to suspect the opposite. Could it be that we are simply paying for the marketing on the QS and an even greater amount of marketing on the Pennzoil?

For example in the 5w30s:

Shell Syn 57.47@40c 10.51@100c Unstated VI
Quaker State Synthetic 58.50@40c 10.53@100c 172 VI
PP 57.50@40c 10.30@100c 169 VI

Looking at the 40c and 100c viscosities, I would be willing to bet Formula Shell Syn's VI is higher than Quaker State Synthetic and PP

Findings in 5w20 are similar:

Shell Syn 46.5@40c 8.7@100c Unstated VI
Quaker State Synthetic 46.51@40c 8.68@100c 168 VI
PP 46.84@40c 8.48@100c 160 VI

If you read a little more carefully, the title uses the word suspicion. My initial post uses the word suspect. How that is the same as my entire perception of quality being based on VI is beyond me.

Are you saying I should completely ignore those specs?
 
I had always assumed that Quaker State Conventional, Pennzoil Conventional and maybe Shell oil were the same or at least had the same base oil. I was told, I think by Johnny, that not only does Pennzoil Conventional and QS have different additive packs and suppliers but also the base oil is slightly better in Pennzoil Conventional than Quaker State Conventional. VI doesn't eman much to me in itself because how do I know it's not due mostly to VI improvers?

I always figured QS was pretty good. I haven't seen a lot of UOA of Pennzoil Conventional vs. QS, but the one I did with QS the additives looked good for the most part, lots of boron and phosphorus at a good level, but calcium wasn't so high and oil viscosity really dropped within 2800 mi. Supposedly there was fuel dilution but I can't find any high evidence of it, so who knows what the real numbers are?

I am running some PP now and I can really tell the difference in cold engine running and the PP seems to be cleaning the engine better than QS already. That's another thing, I didn't think QS kept the engine the cleanest. I think I'll use Pennzoil Conventional over QS for the extra dollar or two more.

you think it's too expensive? compared to what
 
Yeah its tough to judge three oils by just a handful of numbers.

BUT, I think there is probably less difference in the oils, than the difference in price that we pay!

If only I could get a 5W30 and 10W30 Rotella in both conventional and synthetic. All I see available is 15W40 conventional and 5W40 synthetic. If I'm going to pay the price for RTS I might as well go with 5W30 PP.
 
I have quit worrying if they are taking advantage of my loyalty to Pennzoil Conventional and switched to Mobil M1.

Not expensive in the grand scheme of things but sometimes I have to question if paying more for something really means it's better. Formula Shell Synthetic can be had for $20/6 Qts at BJ's. QS for ~$20 for 4 or 5 Qts and PP for $23 for 4 or 5 Qts at Walmart. Of course any rebate on any of these will win out value wise =)

Glad to see all the support for PP here!
