A look at lovely Detroit

The video is a little old now, but still conveys what alot of Detroit looks like. The singer in my country/classic rock band lives in the ghetto but it's not so bad these days... not too many people are around anymore. Pheasants come out in the evening accross the street and I expect quite a bit of wildlife to return as many neighborhoods are going back to their natural state.

My dad said he saw the same thing when he visited Detroit 2 months ago.

He also said that feral dogs are taking over the streets, nad that was a sign that Detroit was being returned to nature.

Thanks for posting it. I'll check it out more later. Last time I was there I drove through a lot of it just to see what it looked like. Brush Park was fascinating. Shame to see all those nice old houses gone to ruin. A few were restored, but so many were barely standing or already gone.

A company I worked for took sattelite pictures of Detroit, 10 years apart. They showed Detroit using false color imagery (red for vegetation). There is a lot more vegetation in Detroit than there was in years past. Lots and houses are abandoned, overgrown with weeds, bushes, and trees. Some parts of Detroit look downright rural. Even some abondoned skyscrapers have trees growing on the roof. Windblown seeds take root and grow into the broken concrete.

It's a real shame about the houses. Most of them are better built than suburban homes.

Merkava, what's the deal here? Are you bored of polishing your wrenches?

Pick on a city when it's down and out? Shame on you.

It's all in the eyes of the beholder:

The area around Comerica Park was nice, but after the Tigers game we drove out of town along Michigan Avenue and that part of Detroit looked bad (worse than it did in the '80s).

this is what I've been thinking of lately; they need to allow/encourage obsolete cities to return to their natural state. think about it, why did cities sprout/grow where they are? access to rivers for transportation or natural resorces. now that those things aren't applicable anymore, there should be a concerted effort to 'shut down' Detroit. instead of trying to fix the schools or job training, those people should be relocated to where the jobs are. recycle what you can, implode the rest, and let nature take over.
maybe a crazy, impossible to implement idea, but other cultures throughout history have relocated entire populations. China STILL does it.

I'd have to agree. There's not much left to save. Man, I can't believe anyplace in the US can be this bad.

This neighborhood is near where a friend of mine lives. I didn't like going there ten years ago, but now most of the neighborhood is vacant. Lots of burned down houses. Most of the remaining people are alright folks, but they live in poverty. There just isn't much of anything of value there.

(just zoom into the street view)

Some thinkers in Detroit are making grand plans with the vacant land to turn Detroit into an agricultural community... locally grown produce employing local people.

...jobs which can then be given to illegal immigrants, after the locals stop showing up for work. Sort of like the landscaping jobs around here.

Man, I grew up in a ghetto. I know all about neighbors doing drug deals, shootouts, never going anywhere without a gun, wondering if someone is going to do a driveby, etc. I still went to college and got 2 degrees, work 2 jobs, and own 2 decent vehicles and a house. I don't listen when people tell me they can't get out. These people are the same - they need to better themselves because nobody else is going to do it for them.

Oh boy, now you opened a can of worms. I disagree. If they were the same, wouldn't they have chosen to have two degrees like you, instead of living in the slums?

I think that some people that have been raised one way their ENTIRE life don't know HOW to help themselves. If you threw 100 flatlanders into a lake, would they all learn to swim by instinct? No, many would drown.

You cannot empty the gutter...ever. Someone has to be there. The only thing you might alter is how civil or socialized they are.

I guess capitalism really does work, assuming that you factor in all the cost.

Here is the sample here: people move out of bad neighborhood, money pour into new area, leave behind a prime location that was at one point good value abandoned. The area becomes nature again, and after a few hundred years the government start developing the area because it is all of a sudden good again.

It's like population control, as long as you can accept a certain level of casualty things always work out.

I don't feel sorry for the people of Detroit one bit.

Who's fault is it that area looks like a war zone ?
