Here's a dash-mounted 3-speed manual, alive and well at a local playground.

Time to take a die grinder and add gears to the shifting pattern. 😁
If they were trying to replicate the old 3-on-the-tree (though they didn't get the shift pattern quite right) as found in my '63 Biscayne, there must be no synchro into 1st! 😉

What, no 4th and 5th?
4th and 5th on the column sounds weird to us here (in North America), but during our year in NZ I did drive two vans (Mitsu Delica and Toyota HiAce) with column-mounted 5-speed shifters. I liked them.

But apparently 6-speed MTs have around for a while now. I haven't driven one yet.

Uh most manuals now are at least 6 speed. Donut right or don't do it at all.
And I remember when 5-speeds were a big deal ... :sneaky:

The first one I remember is the '75 Toyota Corolla SR5. My '71 Corolla 1600 with the 4-speed didn't have a tach. I bet it was revving pretty high at 60 MPH.

We have one remaining MT vehicle in the extended family - a 2009 Mazda5 with a 5-speed. The 2nd gen was available with a 6-speed MT. I'd like to at least drive one.

Yeah my 95 Ford truck came with a 5 speed and no tach. Thankfully you can easily add one with junk yard parts. Now if only the manual trucks didn't come with 2.73 rear ends...

My 2016 Mazda 6 has a 6 speed and i do like it but the throttle response really kills the amount of joy I could be having with it.

I think Ford trucks of that era used a Mazda MT. We likely had the same in our late, great 1990 MPV van. Very nice shifting.

Too bad about the 2.73; whatever rear end the MPV had, it buzzed along quite happily at 2500 RPM in 5th at 100 kph (62 mph).

2-3 years ago my nephew bought his first car, a '99 F-150xl with the 3.8 windsor, and 5 speed... IIRC when i was looking things about it up, it is a Mazda box, also used in the Ranger.
