He accidentally topped the oil off with 1/4 quart Dexoron III, now he's worried. I told him it shouldn't be a problem, especially not if he changes the oil soon. Right? .... RIGHT?

That's why I figured a 1/4 quart would not be a short-term issue at all. Nevertheless, he could need a good scare.

ATF is primarily motor oil with a lot of detergents. Years ago, I used it as a cheap engine flush. I dropped the oilpan on a 73 Mustang II that I used it on years ago, and the engine was spotless.

And if his wife's engine was a sludge monster, his mistake may have been very good for the engine!

Edit: My standard flush practice back then was to add 1 quart of ATF, run the car 100 miles, then change the oil.

Guys ATF could not flush it own shadow out of any internal combustion engine! The ATF as an engine flush myth is not going to help anyone!! Look at the VOA and UOA of ATF it does not have hardly any additives compared to to a cheap dino oil. As a matter of fact ATF is more likely to leave behind deposits as it was never intended to be used in an internal combustion engine and has a low falsh point, high ash content and next to no additives compared to crankcase oil. Most ATF's range between 5W and a 20W.

The reason transmission are so clean compared to engines is because their is no combustion takeing place. Since their is no fuel burning in the trans and no carbon you get almost no deposits. Their is no dirt either from fualty air filter etc... It is almost a sealed device. the only way to get deposits is to run the ATF too long or too hard!
