'95 Grand Cherokee with 5.2

I pulled the compressor core because it looked like it had certainly been leaking. I promptly lost it and canNOT find it (to reference) no matter how I try.

I tried the three following cores and only the smallest tire-valve-style comes close, but it won't seat/stop and seems like you can thread it too far. It meets slight resistance but then goes so deep you can lose it in the compressor.

So the question is: did Chrysler use some unique core here, is the manifold damaged, or am I incapable of properly installing a valve core?

With 100% certainty I can say Chrysler was using the same R134a valve cores the rest of the industry was using at the time.

Here's to hoping the sealing surface wasn't damaged while trying to install the wrong core. There are many more high flow core's sizes than 2!

Interestingly, the low side appears to be a spring loaded ball check valve.

Anyway, I guess I'll have to pull the manifold from the compressor if no one has suggestions on other styles to try. It appears all new compressors are sold without and you're expected to move the manifold over, anyway:

Sure wish I could find the core I removed but it's partying with all the 10mm sockets.....

In poking around RA, this looks like what i likely need, essentially a "tire valve" on steroids. Inexplicably this is not included in any of the (admittedly universal) "kits" that are supposed to include everything you need

Seems to cross to Mopar 68298112AA -- now to find an equivalent in stock locally. RA's price of 23 cents is great but I dont want to wait on shipping

Going off memory you need a JRA valve core.

UPDATE! Playing the interchange game, I plugged the UAC part # of GAO631C into NeedAPartA**hole and got their # of 409504. THEN if I put that into O'Reilly's interchange I get a Murray 59334. So it is available, assuming this is what I need (still guessing!!)

I think those are low pressure side cores. The parts catalog for Jeep shows the high pressure service port being the entire $50 screw-in valve. P/N 4720848. No serviceable core is shown.

Oh like you never saw it fall? I redid my post. You need a JRA core. It's a Japanese compressor so it uses the Japanese style core.

I finally recruited my wife who prides herself on finding small things (I know, I know.....) and she found the old core nestled inboard of the p/s pump near the timing cover. It is a JRA core! I can find them at O'Reilly as a kit for, say, an '05 Nissan Altima (26783) or individually at Autozone as Santech MT0059

Thank you! This is a frustrating side of the industry as I have yet to see any application listing showing a JRA core for a ZJ

Thats a high pressure relief valve. Not a charge port.

Ya I searched and everyone lists the wrong parts for it. It's the same as a Dodge truck of the era too.

That's a very good compressor. Rarely fail.

Well thank you to @Chris142. The 26783 kit contains the correct JRA valves and was $9.50 on my account. In a very small twist of irony noted only by my tiny brain, this is one digit away from the 26782 kit EVERY parts listing on the planet says you need.

Chris may live in the Hills Have Eyes California Edition, have a hot Jeep neighbor girl, try to pass fake 100's to the gas station and not be able to fix his mailbox when it gets hit, but he knows his shtuff when it comes to A/C!! Chris: I JEST, I JEST! (and I can dish it out but I can take it!!)

Also, note that basically the answer to my very first post here is yes, Chrysler did use an oddball valve core because Chrysler. But man if you don't have Chris142 on speed dial you're screwed.

I wouldnt call that an oddball core. Chrysler sourced many of their A/C components from Denso and still does. Denso is Japanese obviously and JRA stands for Japanese refrigeration association. That core fits darn near every asian vehicle and some domestics. I buy them 50 at a shot from Toyota, p/n 88374-30010
