Friend of mine has a 2009 Honda Pilot with the 3.5L and we use Pennzoil Conventional 5w20, allowing the oil life indicator to determine maintenance intervals. The dealership uses bulk 20W-50 meeting API SL/CF, and recommends an oil change every 5,000 km (3,000 miles), but we just go with what the book recommends instead.
Anyhow, 5W-20 is a bit of an exotic oil grade here and is a bit difficult to find outside of Ford and Chrysler dealerships. The Ford dealership used to offer Motorcraft Full Synthetic 5W-20, but we were no longer able to get hold of that. It was reasonable at $10.95 a quart too. Mopar 5W-20 or Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 is $10.04 a quart at the Chrysler dealer and $9.13 at third party resellers. Ace Hardware has Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 for $7.85 a quart, so that's where we were getting our oil.
Over the past year, we have had difficulties sourcing Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 from Ace Hardware. So when we saw it available, we got enough for 2 oil changes just to be in the safe. But recently, it's been absolutely impossible to get it. I spoke with the guy at Ace three days back, and he said 5W-20 would be available on the shelves this week, so I said great and I would be buying 12 quarts of the stuff.
Walk into Ace this morning, and the guy goes "Sorry sir, it's sold out!" So I ask how the heck it's sold out when it just arrived this week. Apparently, they had 120 quarts on order and this same guy keeps buying all their stock as it comes. He asks them to call him up when it's there and buys the lot, probably selling it for the same price as third party resellers are. It's not like it's on sale, and $7.85 is already overpriced for a conventional oil no matter how good it is. Don't get me wrong, I love the stuff...but you guys probably get it for less than half the price over in the US. Everything is well overpriced in this country anyway. Simply take off the $, €, £ or whatever sign in front of the price and replace it with a Dinar sign instead.
Anyway, we weren't paying $9.13 for the stuff, so we went with Liqui-Moly Fuel Efficient AA 5W-20 instead. At least it's a Group III synthetic and is reasonably priced at $10.58.
I can understand getting enough for 2 or 3 oil changes, but buying the lot is just ridiculous.
