I have had a suburban that has been in and out of the shop for over a year. Well we picked it up yesterday and took it to get inspected and it was denied due to the computer having too many unset or unready codes. The man said just drive it around a few days and bring it back. Problem is the registration is out of date so im nervous to drive it. Do you know how long it needs driven to update these codes?

This relates to all gm and the codes are common for most obd 1 & 2. All codes current & history can be reset or erased from the driver seat. Current active codes will reappear.

Go to the top of the page for the proceedure. codes

Thats how it used to be here as well but a few years ago they flipped it around on us and we no longer get a window sticker. We get it inspected first, that sends an update to Raleigh and allows you to update your registration.

I wish we had inspections here in MN. I see so many cars with CELs driving around, and hear so many more that are clearly running on 2/3 of the cylinders that the cars came with. All that pollution just drifts east...

They are talking about the readiness tests that all OBD2 vehicles run. They should all run as you drive around - but some will not run unless certain conditions apply such as a more than 1/2 tank of gas is req'd for some evap tests to run. Also - if there are any issues with the truck some tests will never run and you'll have to fix the problem 1st.

I dont think there are any problems. Never any check engine codes and it was fine when we started working on it in October. I think the shop must have had the battery disconnected for some reason so it just reset everything.

Be real careful what you wish for. You would have to be an idiot to want that.
