I know many cars today have a coolant temp sensor for the dash gauge and a separate temp sensor for the ECM/ computer. I am asking because my dau.s 1998 Jeep Wrangler with 2.5L 4 cylinder engine and manual trans. recently had a new water pump installed. After this procedure, the dash coolant temp. sensor read about 150* under all conditions. I got the shop to replace it, but now wunder if the defective sensor was also feeding bad info to the engine computer or is there a separate sensor for that? If it was used for both, it would be like having the carb. choke stuck on continuously in the old days. Results would be bad MPG.

According to my quick 2 minutes of research, it has just one sensor.
My van has a one wire sensor for the gauge, and a 2 wire CTS for the computer.

Single wire coolant sensors are for the gauge or dummy light. A two wire coolant sensor is for the computer.
A 3 wire single sensor is usually for computer and gauge/light. So if you fine one sensor with 3 wires then your search for additional sensors is over.

Our GM products have one sensor in the head and one near the thermostat housing.

You're right, I shouldn't have been so hasty in my reply.
Napa's website lists only one temp sensor for that vehicle. If it had 2 sensors, it would most likely list both of them. The sensor it lists looks like this:

I just checked the mileage on the Jeep Wrangler and it was 16.2 MPG. Yes, that is a 4 cyl. 2.5L eingine with 5 speed manual. This was mostly with the old non-working CTS. So now I can't wait to see if the MPG improves with the new CTS installed.

I have heard that. Neither the 2.5L four or the 4.0 six were known for great gas mileage. I saw on one of the Sat. morning car shows you can easily upgrade the 4.0 to the 4.2 six that came in some of the Grand Cherokees. But there is a Jeep dealer who will put a Chrysler Hemi and trans in a late model Wrangler for you.
