There is no reason here not to go 15k km(
Use a quality boutique filter for peace of mind. For additional oil filter media and if there is room, consider a bigger oil filter. Since budget is an issue, a bigger filter shouldn't cost much more and is an option over some expensive boutique filters. I'm thinking the PH8a/51515 or PH3569/51191 quart sized which is used to prevent Passat 1.8T sludging.

All the oil consumption and top-offs will refresh this oil plenty!

Either of the 5w-50s will work well enough as the initial fill. Ford dealers also have a 5w-50.

Definitely convince your friend to top off that oil regularly. I wouldn't be surprised if initial negligence has caused the oil consumption to be excessive. And, any synthetic oil/weight can be used for top-off if the preferred oil isn't available.

Anyone nothing the visc? 40wt normal shearing for widespread oil visc range!

Since your in Canada, and with interesting winters, I would use a 20w or 15w--50 synth oil. Stick with the 5w50. Any synthetic 0w, 5w, or 10w---40wt could also be used and might be better during the winter(or as winter top offs). The 15w50 and 20w50's would make a good summer top off if 5w50 is sold out.

Make sure whatever VW is using for crankcase ventilation is working correctly.
Its also helps to get an engine up to temp quickly. Thermostat replacement and coolant flush is recommended, if not recently done.

I also think that an oil catch-can would be interesting to monitor with this engine!

With excessive oil consumption, carbon buildup is an issue. Quality FI cleaner should be used a tank or 2 before each OCI!

Sorry for the late response... On vacation last week

Thanks again for all of the tips. Will definitely show them to my friend.

Just an update... Now that the warmer weather is beginning to set in, sure enough, all of that white stuff has dissapeared.

He's still on the current fill of 5W50 Mobil 1 Synthetic (has about 5,000 km on it at this point). So far, it's only needed 0.75 L of top up. Not bad considering how fast it eats the 30 weights!

I'll post up his 15,000 km analysis whenever he gets there for you guys to check out.

Cheers

For the thought of it being related to the high spread in viscosity, we get it on 5W-20 all the time in winter. If it is winter and the dipstick is clean and only found on the oil cap wipe it out and ignore it.

As far as UOA goes looks like your engine loves that stuff leave it alone and be happy.
