I want to put 5w-50 oil in my 1998 BMW 740iL. I live in Chicago
so winter is also considered. Also extended drain intervals. what do you guys think?

Is there a reason to use the 5w50? I figured the BMW high performance/Castrol TXT would be fine to use. I am curious.

I think it's much heavier than you need particularly for the winter.
If I'm not mistaken the spec' for your engine is an oil with a HTHS viscosity of 3.5 cP and any 0W-40 will fit that bill such as M1 0W-40. Castrol GC 0W-30 would also work.

Shell Rotella T5 or T6 or Mobil Delvac 1 would be fine choices. They're available in 5w40 and can take the abuse of a 10,000 mile interval.

You could also snag Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck, it's another very stout oil. I heard Wal-Mart has it on sale right now.

That 740 has the M62 power plant.

For year round use I'd recommend GC on the 30 side (almost a 40), M1 0W40 would work well (but might be noisy - you'd have to try it) or Rotella T6 as a 5W40. You could also easily run a 15W40 in the summer - I do in several BMWs including one with an M62. Exotic oils are completely unnecessary in an M62 but Redline 0W40 would probably also fit the bill nicely.

Most people find 50 weights too heavy in M62s, and it isn't necessarily from a technical/mechanical standpoint. I've even seen some excellent M62 UOAs in the UOA forum here on dino GTX 10W40 @ 10k mi (!)

Is there a particular reason you have your mind made up on a 50?

I was just thinking "Would this work". The GC 5W-40, I'll have to look around for it. Amsoil was my frist choice (5W-40) followed by RLI (Renewable lube Inc) and maybe Lubro Moly brand. I should have mention it was the M62 engine.

GC is 0W30, and that's the only way it comes. Syntec 5W40 isn't anything magical - just another Syntec.

I've read around here that Amsoil's Euro 5W40 (AFL) is nothing particularly special - neither good nor bad. It was on my radar at one point for my BMW but isn't any longer. There are other, probably better, oils around for less $$.

Is this vehicle new to you? Or do you know a long history for it?

Agreed; M1 0W-40 should also work well.

If that M62 is like most of the M62s I have serviced, it is seeping oil here and there. I have often used Maxlife 10W-40 or M1 HM oils with good results for this reason. Otherwise, an HDEO would be ideal for that engine. 15W-40 for summer use or a synthetic 5W-40 for year round use. The 2 gallon capacity works well with HDEO's as well. Rotella, M1 TDT, Schaeffers-take your pick.

If you want to try a 5W-50, I see no reason not to do so. Not sure what advantage there would be over a 5W-40 unless the engine is worn. Castrol Syntec comes in a 5W-50 and so does Schaeffers in gallon size. I would say the Schaeffers is a better oil overall and for longer drain intervals if I had to make an eduacated guess.

The BMW is new to me (used). What is a "HDEO"? Can you give give a list? The car has 112200 miles now so I want an oil change.

HDEO = Heavy Duty Engine Oil. This stuff is typically marketed for diesels but many of the major brands carry gasoline ratings too.

Rotella T 15W40 or T6 5W40 syn
Delo 400
Devac1
Esso XD3 0W40 syn or 15W40 dino

Pretty much any 15W40 dino you find will probably be an HDEO. 5W40s require more looking for diesel ratings or "HDEO" printed right on it.

Talked to the tech guy at Schaeffer Oil, he said the series 9000 5w-50 would work in my BMW. So I'm leaning that way and the price is right.
