I've posted a few threads about this car in the last couple of months and was rewarded with good advice.. This posting is, in some ways repetitive, but more a continuation after making changes or cleaning up some potential problem areas.

My daughter's '98 accord has 188,700 and an irritating piston slap along with a thirst for oil... 1qt +/- every 1,000 miles which started at around 175k miles. Not leaking... No plumes out the exhaust. Oil is just consumed. Performed compression test earlier this year and the numbers were very good across the board - although I can't remember exactly what they were... 190, I think?

Until this last OC, car had a steady diet of Mobil 1 5W-30 and I changed every 5k. For some reason which I can recall, I decided that a 3k OCI might be good move going forward.

Car Specs:

1. Bought the car in '09 with 150k miles. Been running very well
2. Routinely replace the PCV every other change
3. Clean engine (no sludge)...
4. Kreen run last 500 miles in sump before OC with Seafoam run thru intake
5. Last oil change at 188,100 with Pennzoil 5W-20 and MoS2 and Fram Tough Guard filter
6. 99% use will be short hops to work which is less than 2 miles up an down Hilly terrain. Maybe twice per month a 200 mile r/t run.

Some questions:

- is it true that it takes some time for the effects of HM oil to make themselves apparent? My hope is a HM oil will mitigate the oil loss and I'm wondering at what point I can expect to see the results

- I called it piston slap above but am not 100% certain that's appropriate. Valves have been adjusted and it still makes noise so I'm inclined to rule out a valve tick. Might a HM oil have any impact on valve train noise or piston slap? This noise won't stop after car has warmed up

- I went with the 5W-20 this OC thinking it might offset the fact that the car rarely gets a chance to fully heat up. Was that a good or bad idea?

- I picked up a jug of Valvoline MaxLife (red bottle) 5W-30 as the price was great at Walmart: $12 after coupon. Easily returned if that is a bad pick

- of the HM oils, does any specific brand stand out as a clear "winner"? Given the car's usage above, might one be a better candidate than another?

- is it a bad idea to change from one HM oil to another before giving them time to work? In other words, run a HM oil 2 or 3 cycles before changing...

I've stated before in previous threads that I enjoy working on cars but after an entire summer with very little accomplished toward stopping the oil loss or deadening the noise, I'm getting tired

Any/All input is appreciated

It does take a few OCI's for the HM oil to work usually. The consumption won't stop but it may slow down. As far as stopping the noise, I can't tell you if it will or not. The Maxlife 5w30 is a great brand/grade to start with and would have been my choice. Give it a few runs and see what happens, then you could switch to Pennzoil HM, Castrol HM etc. SuperTech HM is a good one too.

Is it a piston slap or a knock? I have a friend with a V6 accord and it has some serious piston slap on cold mornings! There are a few people at work that have similar cars that piston slap.

Thank you Chubbs

I kind of figured it would take a few runs but was hoping (against hope) the impact would be more instantaneous... With the miles racking up so slowly, it's going to take a long time .

Think the 3k OCI is a waste?

Miller: I'm just not sure... From what I've read, a piston slap might go away once car reaches normal operating temp,,, that's not the case here. A knock sounds like it could be a big deal..?

Mobil Super HM would be an excellent choice for this engine. Since you already have the maxlife I'd definitely use it!

Piston slap goes away when the engine warms up. A knock ... means something is worn out.

My son had an 02 Neon with 100k+ miles - piston slap never went away - warm or cold. I'm not sure if it affects engine longevity that much, it's just annoying. MaxLife might be the best bet to slow down the consumption problem, if not, at least you won't be topping off with expensive synthetic. Stock up while it's cheap - those Walmart coupons pop up on a regular basis lately.

My Accord with the K24 has piston slap, but it goes away after its fully warmed up. Was that engine back spec'd for 5w20? If not then dont use it, if it has then 5w20 is a good idea. Pennzoil High Mileage would be something to consider as well.

Maxlife is one of the best, and I've tried all the HM oils. That is a fantastic price too!

It's possible you could see some slight benefits sooner. A fresh oil change with HM oil makes a leak I have pretty much stop for the first 1000 miles or so (I realize leak is not your problem).

I've tried them all and Maxlife is the only oil I didn't see a reduction of consumption with.

I understand I am most certainly a minority.

The two that work best for me are Castrol HM, Pennz HM and QS Defy.

On my 99 Accord I4 I noticed an improvement immediately. I was running MC syn-blend and topped off with MaxLife. After topping off with a quart I never noticed any more consumption. I also replaced the pcv valve at the same time. Car probably had 135k miles. Sold it with 166k.

The first time I noticed the oil low I topped off with Mobil Clean 5k. That was gobbled up quickly. Next time used the MaxLife and voila. No more noticeable consumption.

The trick is addressing the issue quickly. Once the rings are worn away there's no growing them back. Then you need a ring job.

Thanks Greg

I misspoke earlier. I am using Pennzoil 5w-20 HM this fill. And, yes, the car is back spec'd or a 20W. Just wish the miles would rack up sooner. At 4 -10 per day, going to be a LONG time before any benefit will be seen.

Thanks all for your input. It's going to be a waiting game - no choice unfortunately, but I appreciate you taking the time respond
