I recently laid purchase to a '96 Caprice LT1 9C1 and its got about 130k on the clock. Runs excellent. I really would like this motor to last around 250-300k so I was looking at using a well-priced synthetic. From searching through posts about LT1 oil, most of the people recommended Mobil 1 0w40 and not 5w40. Which one do you guys think would be better? I was going to go with the 5w40.

I've got a '96 with the LT1 in it.
It appears from reading this forum that it'll do well on German Castrol 0W30.
It'll also do nicely on Mobil 1 5W30. If you buy at the right time and place, the Mobil 1 will save you money over the GC.

I wouldn't run Mobil 1 5w30 in that vehicle, its just too thin. Stick with GC or Mobil 1 0W-40. Before I made it on here I ran 5w30 religiously, now I'm a little smarter.
Ok, but what would be wrong with running a 5w40? I was going to use this all year round and I was thinking that the cold 5 weight will help with startup lubrication. What are the exact differences between Mobil 1 0w40 and Mobil 1 5w40?
Nothing wrong with it, in fact I ran Mobil 1 Truck and SUV through my '96 Impala SS for about 10K (two OCI's). However I never performed any used oil analysis so its hard to tell if it was a good choice or not.

The LT1 tends to like a thick 30 to thin 40wt oil. I got great results running GC 0w30 (which is a thick 30wt) in my old 95 LT1 Firebird.
I noticed that and did consider it, but the stores near my house dont sell the German made stuff. I think I will try the T&S 5W40 and see what it does.
