95 Camry Trans Fluid

I posted earlier in the year I acquired a 95 Camry 2.2L 4banger. It only had 68k when I took posession and never had a transmission service in 17 years.

Instantly I dropped the pan, cleaned the nasty stuck on gasket, and replaced the filter. 3.5qts is all you get. Filled with maxLife.

9k miles later I decided I would do the same drop and fill. Kit is cheap so I also replaced the filter. 3.5qts MaxLife later....Fluid looks pretty robust.

This was a first time experiment for me...a 17 year old car, 2 pan drops and fluid went from a dark red with a little brown (no burnt smell) to a pretty darn shiny bright red.

So, I'm happy!

Just doing the standard drain and fill every 15 K has caused my 99 Camry to go almost 300K.

185,000 on my 2002 Taurus.

Before I was a BITOG'er I went the first 100,000 before having the transmission done.

Now I do a drain and fill every 25,000-30,000 miles.
So far it is working like a champ.

+1 for Maxlife... I have it in everything right now. 2 Taurus's, a 1998 F-150, and a 2004 Nissan Xterra.

I'm running it in all mine as well...10 Armada and 95 Camry as I type...just used up my last 8 qts of Mercon V. Next change for the 04 F-150 will be MaxLife.

Toyota OE transmission filters are screens. I have never replaced mine.

Oddly enough my 96 camry (now my parent's DD) same setup as yours, never had a ATF change aside from when i replaced the radiator 2 months back and that was only one total qt of maxlife going in.

I bought it around 03-04 with 60k, used it till around 09 when i hit about 95k and the timing belt snapped like 3 days before i was planning on doing it. I let it sit there for a while and my parents now use it.

115k miles and fluid was RED! when it came out. I always said i was go change the fluid one day but my parents are ready to scrap my old car. Never had a slippage or issue. The suspension on it is another story...

I still see the '92-96 Camry's driving around my area of Western NY State with little rust in this salt ridden state. I can't believe it when I see'em. They still look good!

As-far-as the transmission fluid...Dexron III/Mercon is what they called for so, just about anything will work in'em! MaxLife ATF is a good choice

I recently did a drain and fill (no filter/screen replacement) on my wife's 2002 Corolla for the first time at 80k. It came out a little chocolate-ish so it was certainly overdue. It seems to love the MaxLife Dex/Merc I filled it with. Shifting is so much firmer now, and accelerating from a stop are done with a lot more authority. Great stuff!

Not this one...has a filter. This is the only Toyota I've owned. Nissan's I've dropepd pans on all had screens.

My 94 Camry 4 cyl. was going strong when I sold it at 220K miles or so. The new owner was lucky, the transmission had a Magenfine inline filter and Amsoil ATF. Hope he did not dump out the ATF and pour in stuff from the Dollar store. But its not for me to worry.

Not this one...has a filter. This is the only Toyota I've owned. Nissan's I've dropepd pans on all had screens.

Then somebody changed it. You should see fine screen through the filter housing.

I need to get my moms 95 Camry ATF changed, car has 115k and never changed as far as I know. Any suggestion for the fluid and which filter to use? I am anxious to drop the pan very soon and do this.

I used Maxlife and all went well. Smooth shifting so far!

I asked my mechanic about the filter/screen. The first change i did and remembers it being a filter...My mechanic said he considers it a filter but some call it a screen?????

This older Camry might have a separate differential that also uses ATF. You should check the service manual to see if you have one. Change the fluid if you do have the separate differential.

Thanks for the heads up...it's a singular unit. First time I've had any vehicle (had a few I-Roc Z's in the day but mostly trucks) without a front diff.

Two of my SIL's had that gen Camry('92 & 95) both 4 cyl.
IIRC, they(or at least the '92) had seperate differential drain/fill hole above the transmission. It was difficult to refill without a helper but, can be done!

After draining the differential on the '92, I put a long hose on a funnel and held the hose in the fill hole while my BIL poured in the DexIII into the differential.
