If the truck is the 4WD version, it has the A340F transmission.

Since the noise is heard in N and P, it can likely be narrowed down to the torque converter, oil pump, O/D input shaft bushings and bearings or the O/D planetary carrier. These are the only items that spin when the transmission is in N or P. These are all in the front of the transmission and easily accessible once the transmission is removed.

Transmission shops don't like to do spot repairs on high mileage transmissions. If they fix a noise problem and nothing else, they would likely be blamed if a totally unrelated transmission problem happens a couple thousand miles later.

Knowing which engine the truck has, and whether it is 2wd or 4wd, would allow us to identify the exact transmission it has.

Should have an A340 regardless.

Honestly...I might change the fluid & filter and just drive it! It may go another 100,000 miles...this trans really IS that tough.

Thanks for this!

I know it's a 4 cylinder (not sure of codes) and it's a 2WD automatic.

If it were mine and I had a backup, me too!!!

Thanks all.

I'm used to forums sending email alerts when replies are posted to my threads, but seems that doesn't happen here (or I haven't figured out how to turn that feature on, though, I've tried).

Last I heard, after reading your responses, she decided to take it to a family friend who is going to give it a look and possibly replace the torque converter, if that's what he deems it to be.

Many thanks!
