This is a report from a member of the SAABNET community that I am copying to here:

1994 SAAB 9000 Turbo Aero
120,000
Mobil 1 10W-30
10,000 on oil, no make-up
Mostly city driving

Blackstone testing - 1/6/04

AL 6
Ch 1
Ir 50
Co 5
Lead 37
Tin 1
Moly 66
Nick 1
Sil 0
Tit 0
Pot 0
Boron 106
Sil 11
Sod 10
cal 2607
Mag 95
Phos 791
Zinc 962
Bar 0
SUS Vis @ 210 68.2
Flash 350
AntoFreeze 0
Water 0
Insolubles .5

Comment(abbrviated): High lead(if fuel is consistantly present, could harm bearings(lead)), Fuel is probably not a problem due to city driving. TBN reads 1.9, Suggest drop to 4000 miles and resample.

Member wants to know if lead is a problem.

Im not sure what is a norm for these engines.

He pushed it pretty far. I would at least go back to 5K and re-sample. The TBN is probably ok, but I don't like the low flash point or the level of insolubles.

This oil is pretty indestructable, but it looks like he's managed to max it out.

Lead should be more like 15-25 ppm for a 2.3L, four cylinder engine after 10k miles. The iron level should be in the 30-40 ppm range. A slightly thicker oil with a stronger additive package is needed here.

I'd try the Mobil 1R, 0w-30 in this motor if he want to stick with a Mobil lube....It will turn out to be their best product for all these modern four cylinder, turbo engines from SAAB,Subaru,VW/Audi, Volvo.

Well..I guess its the"Value in getting an oil analysis" or conversly ..."How to overextend Mobil 10W-30 by not working up to a 10K mile oil change in stages".

What is the fuel % ??

I agree with TS, but I'd say that Amsoil ASL or any A3 rated oil might do better. Mobil 1 SUV which is Delvac 1 5w-40 might be your best bet. It's really hard to say without any trend analysis. Could be something entirely unrelated to the oil.

Iridium? Cobalt? Must be from those expensive spark plugs. LOL!

For whatever reason, wear metals from the SAAB 2.3L turbo engine are usually higher than other engines. For example, Blackstone's universal averages for this engine (after 3,000 miles) are about:

Fe: 30
Pb: 14

So for a 10K interval, I think the results here aren't so bad... but since this is the high-boost Aero model, I'd go with a thicker A3-rated oil (which will probably reduce the lead).

I suggest M1 0W-40, GC, or perhaps Delvac 1/M1 "Truck & SUV" 5W-40.

The averages I just quoted are for the 9-5, which uses a similar, but not identical 2.3L turbo SAAB engine... I found the UOA here and the Blackstone universal average for iron on the 9000T is higher--47! Lead averages 14 also.

Fuel dilution was 0.8% on this UOA.
