We thought about selling this, but after looking at other used car prices and thinking about it, I decided to do a mid-life rehab for the Wife's car instead. It has held up extremely well, mostly due to the quality of materials & components, but after ~9 years and 42K miles, despite my rather compulsive maintenance, it needed some work.

-refinished the front lower grill which takes a beating on these cars,
-new mats,
-touched up the upper rockers and interior where heels tear it up getting in and out,
-new shift knob,
-thresholds,
-removed the dated CD holder and added another storage slot (used to be just a cell in a cradle and one in the slot..now each has a cell, b'berry, iPhone, etc....)
-completely and properly de-instaled the circa 2003 Nokia car 'phone set up..bit of a pain w/ all the speaker and antenna wiring in the headliner...whatever glue held the external antenna and interior portion on was still holding on pretty darn good, taped over I removed the wire taps,
-new rear emblem, snagged and bent my old one while waxing,
-replaced the throttle body mount & spark plugs,
-Conti DW's,
-replaced or refinished trim under the nose & in front of the rear wheels,
-new Becker head unit w/ iPod lead hidden and run to the console glovebox, thought I'd outgrown replacing stereos :-),
-replaced all the original lights w/ the later OEM clear ones,

Pretty amazing what a little bit of $, a fair amout of hours and a lot of effort wil do.

A guy I worked with a few years back had a 996 911 Turbo with a bit over 200,000 miles on it. He spoke highly of its durability and I believe it with those kind of miles.

I wish my wife would let me drive a 911. Whenever I mention it she starts chanting 'mid-life crisis', to which I have no argument. I know it is not a mid-life thing, but she doesn't buy it. So I will continue to drive sporty, non sports cars.

so if you know that it's not a MLC thing, why don't you buy one? (provided you can afford one)

I agree! Usually the people crying midlife crisis are just haters jealous that they can't have one.

I still have my first Corvette I bought new at age 26. So I laugh when people see me in it (thinking I just got it) and claim I have a midlife...then they shut up when I told them yeah, I started having it at 26! I just enjoy a fast, nice handling car, gee!

Oh and nice 911 - love the tan interior!

I would have to live a life of exile and guilt - or buy her a new BMW 5 series.

so.....I'll keep on driving the Infinitis. They are kind of like Porsches but without the driving experience, power, handling, and most notably - the brakes.

Luckily my family have a couple I can drive occasionally.

Besides, in a few years it might be a MLC thing in which case I will have a valid excuse.

And as for affording it, realistically it is more than I would want to spend on a car, but...

Thanks for the comments.

I believe the Savannah Beige interior was offered until rather recently, I've seen a similar color in a 997. It took some getting used to, but it has aged well enough. Now I am trying to talk myself out of the three spoke steering wheel...never warmed up to the current 4 spoke despite its connection w/ traditional Porsche wheels. I suppose i could sell the current wheel and good airbag to offset the cost....

No IMS issues so far. I cut the filter element apart after every oil change and she's not making any significant metal and almost nothing ferrous. I do find very small amber plastic slivers from the timing chain rails, but that is common for these and usually not a problem until you start reaching 6 figures or start seeing larger chunks.

Yes that is Redline 10w-40. My 'go-to' oil for the fun toys.

Finally complete...

Replaced the OE 4 spoke wheel w/ the 3 spoke. The original wheel w/ the plain embossed crest never did anything for me...
