9 years out of a battery

Recently replaced a 9 year old Group 35 battery from a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. The factory battery (#8201A258) appears to be made by Johnson Controls/Clarios (vehicle was assembled in Bloomington, IL). The owner trickle charged the battery quite often due to frequent short tripping but the vehicle couldn't start. I tried to charge the battery but the voltage quickly dropped to 12.4v, suggesting it was weak or sulphated? I figured it lived a good life and it was time for a replacement.

Replacement battery is a Kirkland battery which appears to be identical, but the specs are different than the factory battery with higher CCA (640A vs 530A) and less reserve capacity (118 vs 100). $110 USD with 48 mo free replacement and 100 mo prorated refund.

that's great, myself going on 8 years now with an interstate in my Honda accord..i'm starting to get worried it just might not start one of these days
 
Getting nine years out of a battery is incredible! In the desert, I could never achieve that. I usually de-sulfate/charge mine every 4 to 5 weeks.

I always run full lights, regardless of the time of day or location, to ensure I’m more visible to others. When it gets crowded during the day, I use high beams, which definitely helps. It makes people less likely to cut me off in traffic. I know this because people who are tempted to switch lanes too close in front of me, begin to merge but then hesitate when they see my high beams. Anyway, I think this is one of the reasons why I can only get about four years out of a battery. 🤷‍♂️

I'm not saying that you shouldn't have changed out the battery after 9 years. Indeed a good move! (y)
I am curious as to, what does the battery voltage drop down to while starting the engine?
Dropping to 12.4v at rest sounds normal. But if it drops below 10v(or there about) while starting, then it is indeed time to start thinking about a new battery. Just sayin'! :)
 
I got 10 years from an Odyssey battery. It tested at 200CCA in the Fall and I didn't want to go into Winter with a battery that weak. Replaced it with another Odyssey battery and repurposed the remaining power in the battery to UPS service.
 
I have 10 years on a Kubota Battery. It is the old style, from which you can fill with water or acid. I have had to top it off once.
 
I get 10-12 years on a Volvo battery. They’re inside the passenger compartment, and I have to believe that the lack of extreme temps helps longevity, because I get about 4 years on the battery in my Tundra, which is under the hood. Just put another one in the truck.
 
I recall we got 10 years from the Panasonic batttery in our 94 Toyota Previa. The battery in the 97 Plymouth Breeze went longer!

Replacements never lasted as well. But temperatures are a main culprit. VW used to have a good map that showed expected battery life in terms of location due to exposure temperatures.
 
My 2016 535d still has the original battery. I'll probably go with a battery from BMW when it's time to replace. I think one thing that helps BMW batteries last is that they're AGM, and they're in the trunk, away from engine heat.

Battery in my 2015 Kubota is still going strong and its sealed. I've already got the marine cranking battery picked out to replace it so I can use the studs to leave a battery charger lead on it.. haha

I just replaced a 2016 Walmart Valuepower in dads Bronco (group 65) and the 2018 in my old F-150 is still going, but showing signs its on the way out.
 
Batteries can last a long time. I just replaced a Walmart Everstart(Johnson Controls, Clarios) with a date code of 04/15 in my Protege. The heat finally killed it. My Pontiac G5GT has an AC/Delco that I installed in 2014. Its days are probably numbered. The Optima Blue Top that I use in my Old Jetboat is still going strong. I bought that battery back in 1992!

I never heard of a battery lasting less than seven years until I joined here. FWIW the factory EFB in my 2017 Titan is still going strong and that’s with the Nissan smart alternator and sometimes sitting for a month between starts.
