8th Gen Honda Accord - feedback

The 12’s may not be covered by the warranty extension but I have definitely seen the issue on both 11’s and 12’s.

In fact, it seems to be most prevalent on the ones that take 0W-20.

Hmm, when you view customer complaints there are exponentially more oil burning complaints on 2008 models, with less and less each year up to 2012, where there are hardly any.

In fact, I just checked Car Complaints and there are 390 complaints of excessive oil consumption on the 2008 model, and only 3 complaints on the 2012. Of those 3, only 1 complaint is on the 4 cylinder, the other 2 are on the V6.

The 2012 model has been out for 9 years now, if oil consumption was a significant problem we would have heard about it by now.

Appreciate all the feedback. I am just looking ahead, in about a year, for a potential replacement. I am currently doing work that involves putting on about 1k/week. I was in a 7th gen (2007) for 3 years, liked the car, but the size increase of the Gen 8 models is what drew me in.

I would be seeking the K24 and 5 speed auto. Around 100k, with the expectations of running it to 225-250k. That is basically what I do with my cars. Buy well maintained older cars, and run them up to that mileage. Rinse and repeat.

Yes, the 8th Gen is the longest Accord in overall length. After owning a 2013 and being around a 2008 for years, I never noticed the 2008 being bigger. If cargo volume is your main goal, the 10th Gen has the most interior cargo room out of all the Accords.

Not cargo room per se... just a bit larger interior 'feeling' than the 7th gen. I would imagine the ride would be a bit different than the 7th gen. The one thing I was never completely happy with, were the seats. Very firm.

7th-9th Gen accords all ride a bit firm. I know the 8th Gen has more interior volume, however, you will be hard pressed to notice a difference. Just trying to help you out. Good luck.

I wish they still made the coupe.

Ford still makes an Accord Coupe :D

As noted in my signature, I own a 2012.
Bought it new. In 106K, besides the usual maintenance, I have put one set of tires on it and 2 batteries.
This was the last year of what IMO feel was probably one of the most stout Honda drivetrains ever produced (K-24 with the 5 speed auto.)
It has been a good car. Good sized and gets 30+MPG highway.
This has been the third Accord sedan that I have ever owned. Saying that, it was the most "Unaccord" like of the three.
I have referred to it as the Japanese version of the Chevy Impala, because that is how this generation presented itself in so many ways.
Cost cutting was deep on this one. It has the cheapest looking interior of any car that I have ever owned. It has not held up especally well, IMO.
It has to have the worst front seats of any car that I have ever owned. I have to keep a lumbar cushion in the drivers seat (I have a bad back.) I have never had to do that on any other auto that I have owned.
Other Accords that I have owned had a degree of sport feel to them. This one is merely a transportation appliance.
However for me, it was a cheap commuting car that had a solid platform ( I put 72K on it in 29 months.)
This car has been good to me, and I like it. However, if you want an exciting ride, this ain't it.

This is 100% truth. I couldn’t have said it any better. The 8th Gen accord was designed to compete with the US market full sized sedans and it took on a lot of characteristics of one particular domestic sedan(aka Chevy Impala). Honda essentially designed the 8th Gen Accord for the US market. The 8th Gen grew in size, gained more horsepower, and didn’t excel in fuel economy. To further make the 8th Gen accord feel more “American” Honda gave the 8th Gens a beefy horn as opposed to the “meep meep” style horns that Asians cars had been known for. Honda used an extensive amount of cheaper materials on this generation unfortunately, however, they are still very reliable.

Honda regained themselves with the 2013 9th Gen accord. Honda was on a downward trajectory and the 2012 Civic was when they hit their ultimate low. Honda knew the 9th Gen Accord had to be a home run and they did pretty much that.

Really good to know. Without looking, is the 9th gen using DI, CVT transmission, etc? Would want to stay away from these 2 items.

Yes, the 9th gen has a CVT and DI, but there is nothing wrong with them. Honda makes the best CVT transmissions, and there are no DI problems, either :)

The CVT will get much better gas mileage, and the CVT fluid is very easy to change on it.

As an added bonus, the 9th gen also gets indirect TPMS, which means no expensive sensors to replace along with the tires.

The 9th gen is a much better car than the 8th gen.

Strict 4-5k oil changes, I am assuming?

The 9th Gen is a very solid car. I had a 2013 new and gave it to a family member two years ago. The CVT has no issues, Honda did their homework when it came to CVTs and their unit is reliable. Same with the 2.4 DI Earth Dreams engine, they are very reliable. I went to a 2018 Hyundai Sonata after my Accord and I can say with complete honesty that I would rather have a 9th Gen accord over the Sonata any day. The 9th Gen was just such a well built car.

Honda uses the maintenance minder to determine the proper OCI. You can follow the minder's suggestion with no problem. However, you do have to change the oil at least once a year even if the light doesn't come on. This could be more common with less driving done due to the pandemic.
