86 Honda running too rich...Help

My friend's 86 Accord is running rich or something. The plugs are fouled with carbon, and the car sometimes feels like it loses power, and it won't start in cold or damp weather. Seems to flood easily. He's using FP. What else can he do? Anything with the carb?
 
Does it have a fresh air filter? Is it carbureted, or fuel injected? If its carbureted, check for sticking linkages. A carb rebuild would be warranted in the near future. If its injected, it could have a weak injector(s) allowing fuel to dribble.

Editing, I see now that it is a carb. A clean air filter and no restrictions, or, if thats not it, then yes, a carb rebuild is in order.
 
I wonder if the carb on that car is one of those electronically controlled doohickeys. If that's the case then there's no telling what could be wrong.
 
worn carb(costly to replace too, because of the lambda part), clogged air filter, stuck or open thermostat, etc. all leads to problems.

To properly resolve this problem is to get a mechanic who performs proper diagnostics right from the beginning. No micky-mousing allowed.
 
I think the float was a to seldom looked at part of a carb. The newer solid foam ones never leaked, but they could stick or the float bowl leak. A little dirt in the needle valve messed things up good too. they also seemed to get out of adjustment.

I have spent hours removing the side of the float bowl on my truck, 3 screws. Pull the float out, bend the tab a little, put it back together. Start the engine, check the level, and start over again until you finally get it just right. I had a spare gasket I left hang out where the gas could dry out and shrink back to where it fit so I could swap them the next time.

I used to almost choke at the brake shop when people would come in and complain about not knowing anything about FI. That never seemed to keep anybody's fingers off the carb.

Could the ignition system be on the weak side?

In 1986 Accord came with carb and fuel injection depending on the model. The LXi was FI all others had carb. The computer is under the driver seat and wiil code out if malfunction is present. I have factory manual so let us know specifics.

I've got an 87 Accord with the carb.
It's quite the complicated carb. There are so many vacuum hoses that control idle, mixture, timing, and a bunch of other factors. You are going to need someone skilled to diagnose that car.
You can try and start with the simple stuff yourself though.
 
Most of the later carbureted vehicles have quite complex arrangements for their carburetors. My favorite example is the 1986 Camaro Z28. Carbureted, but it had a computer with all the sensors a fuel injected vehicle would have, including a throttle position sensor and an oxygen sensor.

Makes you wonder why they just didn't go all the way to fuel injection.
 
Because the accountants said it would cost maybe a couple bucks more.

The 1975 VW Rabbits were denied fuel injection for the same reason. I think it was an extra $5 at the time. This is a fact. Cost them because of the endless problems these caused dealers eventually.
 
My first car was an '87 Honda Civic 1500 CVCC. I haven't seen any other car as complicated as this one. There were about 40-50 different solenoids on this car. There were Hundreds of vacuum hoses everywhere. A huge amount of time was wasted on my part to try and repair this car. In the end I bought a Saturn and sold the Honda 3 years ago to someone for $500. My suggestion is to either run the car into the ground (won't take that long) or buy a used Holley Carburetor and retrofit it. You'll need an aftermarket spacer for the intake manifold. This will get rid of the computer and all the vacuum line garbage.
