In my quest to nurse my worn manual transmission,I`ve been doing a ton of searching/reading on this forum and other car forums on gear oils.

My transmission has worn synchros and bearings, and my new one is on back order. Would something thick like RP 85W140 help tame the gear grind and bearing growl?

Yep, at this point, any 140wt is worth a test if you don't mind the increase in shift effort.

Shifting will probably get worse, but protection and noise reduction will be better.

By shifting being worse,do you mean gear grinding or just requiring more effort to move the shifter?

For a temporary bandaid, this is a time when a Lucas oil product could help. Maybe try adding some of their snot like oil goo and see. If it does damage it won't matter.
