Hi i recently picked up a ford 445 cylinder diesel with the semi auto transmission for the life of me i can not get the starter to engage. Thought the old starter was bad so replaced it but no luck
I've bench tested the starter and it checks out wired it up to the tractor to check for signal from the key and it will engage but once bolted down it will click and not crank it over. I've jacked up the tractor and the flywheel turns when I rotate the tires . Tried by passing the safety neutral switch and same in every gear . Just a strong click and tud. Sounds like the motor is seized but motor moves freely kinda lost on this one

I would start by removing and cleaning of all B+ and ground connections. I would also run a new heavy ground cable from the battery and secure the other end at one of the starter mounting bolts.

You're bench testing the starter but there's no load on it. Was it kind of "gravelly" sounding when it spun? Has it been sitting a while? Could be whatever the brushes rub on is dull and not conducting much current. You could try pulling the starter off and running it no load for a while to see if it polishes itself up. Or if you're any good with electrical motors disassemble it and shine everything that's dull.

I replaced both cables as the old ones were falling apart no change even ran cables off my f350 to see if it was a power issue no change .

There's 5 wires ground and postive , trigger wire and hot wire from ignition and one from the alternator to charge the battery while running

Ground has to be established going through various mated parts. That's why I suggested running the ground connection to a starter mounting bolt.

Otherwise, it's time to use a volt meter and go point to point while a helper cranks the engine. The bad point will have a voltage drop and may even get warm due to the resistance.

When i get to the yard today I'll snap a few pictures kinda hard being a one man show may need to wire up a long push button trigger lol
