Hello again,

I'm doing my first change of fluids (bike has about 700 miles) and was wondering if some of you have suggestions about an 80W90 gear oil. I almost picked the Wally's Supertech, but then I had second thoughts, which may be no more than superstition.

On the Guzz, the 80W90 goes in the tranny and the rear drive box (the latter with an addition of moly). While the engine oil is the most heated (pun not intended

) subject of scrutiny and debate, the gear oil is also doing a job.

Thanks in advance.

Foaming and over-fill are the only 2 lube problems I've seen personally. Sometimes the book specs are a little high and the oil finds it way out the vent, sometime it's the oils fault due to foaming. Don't use valvoline semi-syn, I gave it it 2nd and 3rd chances and it foamed out every time. Amsoil, Rotella, Belray, chevron esi, are ones that seemed to hang in there for me. The rotella was at the same store as the supertech you asked about. Chevron esi is at most big truck stops or shops. Amsoil from Pablo.

My Guzzi 98EV, little over 75,000 miles on it, has had a steady diet of Belray dino in it. Seems it may be 75-90, will have to look. Find it at any bike shop, especially if they deal in dirt bikes. Got a bottle of moly off Moto International that will probably last the life of the bike. I do the tranny as scheduled but do the rear every oil change, which for me is at 3,000 miles. As hard as it works it's worth the 250cc's of gear oil with moly. One tip some Guzzi riders do, after filling the rear, is to open up the top bolt in the rear drive after it gets hot to "burp" it. Some models seem to build up some pressure there.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about foaming, and it's good to know that Rotella works (and to stay away from Valvo semi). I may go and get the Rotella, I know which store they have it at. Right now I got a bottle of Kawasaki 80W90 for rear drives, and another 80W90 heavy duty that I got from Autozone. (I forget the brand). Since I may empty the tranny and rear sooner, it probably doesn't matter that much. Yes, I got the bottle of Power Punch moly from MI (actually Greg at MI has been using Red Line Shockproof Heavy all the way). That's another option for later, albeit more pricey.

Now I remember which brand is the other 80W90 I got: Lucas. Bottle design looks ----, but at least I know the brand has been around for a long time.

On the other hand probably everything from Amsoil is good. I may go with it later if I switch to synthetics.

Thanks for the tips.

I use redline shockproof heavy in my HArley 6 speed. Very smooth. I would call redline and see what they spec for your application.

Redline Shockproof Heavy has been used and praised by many Guzzi owners both in the tranny and the final drive box. I do remember an exception--somebody saying it worked better with the light duty instead.
