76 Pure Synthetic 5W-40

Well I just ordered a case of this stuff for my mothers VW. I emailed 76 lubricants, and they emailed me back with a local marketer in my area. I bought a case for $76.00. That is around $6.33 a quart. That might be high for some people to swallow on here. But from the spec sheets, it looks to be a fine oil. It's on the approved 5W-40 VW 502 list for Europe.

What fo you guys think of this oil? You don't read to much about this on here. I have the 76 Super Syn/blend 5w30 in my car now. I will be doing my OCI next week.

I agree - I think this Conoco oil is a good one. As with the Conoco family, Kendall also makes a version of this oil with the same specs. Its a 40-weight, but not too thick at 14.3 cst, it has decent cold cranking specs of 6000 cst @-30, and it has a strong TBN. I'd love to run it if I could find it, but Kendall products are hard to find up here!

A quick-lube down the street from my house uses 76 oil. He can get the 5w40 synthetic if anyone wants it. I might try this oil in my VW after I dump the PP that's in it now.

I'm confused as to whether you are talking about putting the Synthetic in your Mom's VW or in your car? If you have indeed been using the 76 Super Semi-Synthetic 5w30 and it works so far (for either car) I would suggest substituting a quart of the $6+ product for a quart of the $0.99/$1.29 product at the next OCI.

Gotta' love GI Joe's and Schucks for getting quality oils for no too much dough, eh?

The synthetic is for my mothers VW. I use the syn/blend for my Sentra. Yep, I have been buying the syn/blend at GI Joes. They have been stocking all the high end oils lately also, Royal Purple, Amsoil, and even Mobil 1 5W-40 turbo Diesel.

(By the way, addyguy, "Kendall" doesn't make anything - the former oil company brand is now merely another name that ConocoPhillips markets under. If you have access to Phillips 66 TropArtic, 76 Super, or Conoco All Season synthetic and synthetic blend motor oils at attractive pricing in Canada, you'll get the same blends under alternate labeling.)

What group (3,4 or 5) is this synthetic oil?

I've been trying to find this oil but no luck. Called a few distributors and 76 gas stations. I never seen 76 synthetic oil before, how does the bottle look like? Most synthetics are 6 quarts/case.

It seems that all the Conoco synthetics are Group III. They are really better know for their synthetic blend (such as Motorcraft).

Interesting. I wonder if the European formula is different or if there is a difference between the SJ formula and the current SM formula.

I remember buying SJ 100% Synthetic Havoline 5W-40 years ago and it was excellent oil. They also usually had a Semi-Synthetic 10w30 as well and I bought every quart of that stuff I could find at GI Joe's when they quit stocking it: $0.51 per quart, as I recall.

I bet it is a different oil, now!

I called them one time and they told me it was a PAO.
