75 cent Supertech filters. Worth it?

Guys,

My local Walmart has Super Tech cartridge filters that fit my 2012 Highlander on clearance for 75 cents. They are the older model Super Tech filters that do not have the end caps. That’s probably not a big deal because the OEM Toyota filters don’t either. Anyway, I do 8-10k mile OCIs with synthetic. Are these filters worth picking up for this price? Or should I stick to OEM filters? I’m always up for saving a few bucks, but I don’t want to be penny wise and pound foolish.

Yes. Those are likely the Wix built super techs. Even if they're not I would use them for .75.

That is a great price. The old Super Tech filters on clearance are made by Wix, and they are identical to the Napa Proselect

For 75c, they are a great deal.

But if you buy filters at full regular price, consider Mahle

Ive used Napa Proselects many times and had a great used oil analysis with a 4k mile interval. Id have no doubt the used oil analysis would be just as good with 8-10 but id likely keep a shorter interval ie. 8k miles. Getting a used oil analysis is a way to see but these filters are built solid. I believe these filters are identical to proselects. Id use them for .75 cents each. *im using an Super Tech filter right now, will be running it til Fall unless I get bored first.

In my eyes they are as good as any other 95% efficiency rated filter!

I have one on my escalade right now. It’s a good filter specially for 75 cents. I will use it for 5k OCIs

95% at what micron sized particles?

If you're going to settle for 95% does micron size really matter? It sure isn't likely 20 microns frankly.
But people are going to use what they are comfortable with at the price that fits them.

Well if it's say 95% at 200 microns then it may well matter a bit

I bet it's 95% at 30 microns.

I believe I have seen a spec of 95 percent @ 29 microns on the box of a MicroGard built by Wix. Also on the O'Reilly website.

Yep, and 83% @ 25 microns, so extrapolation yields 68% @ 20 microns, which seems to be the most common point for benchmarking. Been posted before.

95% @ 29 microns just squeaks in under the wire for the USCAR36 efficiency standard minimum of 95% @ 30 microns.

According to Amsoil's study, 68% @ 20 microns is an improvement over Toyota OEM filter media. See graph.

Do those endcapless filters look as well made as the Toyota ones? I've seen some that do, and some that don't.

My new Supertech ST10358 cartridge (which looks extremely similar to the former US-made Fram Extra Guards, not Wix) claims 99% at 30 microns.

Actually, they really do. I stopped by on the way to work this morning and bought the 6 they had for $4.50. I opened each one to check to make sure it had the o-rings and everything. Not bad!

FYI...

Here is an OEM Toyota compared to one of the Supertech filters I bought this morning. The one on the left in the first 2 photos (more yellowish) is the Toyota filter. To the eye, construction and quality seem pretty equivalent between the two--at least to me.

I bought six for our Scion XB, have been using them the past year at 5k runs, no issues.
