I rented a Prius V and scored 70 mpg in highway driving at 45 miles/hour. 65mpg combined (highway + 10 miles stop/go in the city). That's really amazing for a car that holds three rows of seats.

I also rented a C which I didn't like at all (no cruise control; no rear speakers; radio sounded bad). It was 70 highway/67 combined.

---> Toyota has really programmed these cars well, in order to get such high numbers. That's almost as good as my 2-seat Insight (80mpg), but much easier to drive. Just set the cruise control to 45 and the computer automagically gives you high numbers.

BTW I agree 45 is too slow.
It was just a test.
At the speed limit (65) I still got 55mpg in the Prius C..... still impressive.

Probably the same as the C (which got 55).

For some perspective (figures in UK Gallons)

Doing a steady 45 or so on a 10 miles stretch on dual carriageway with average speed cameras I have averaged nearly 80mpg in the wife's Clio dci and probably more impressive averaged 61mpg in the Jag XJL, not bad for a 275bhp auto twin turbo!

If you sit at or around the 45/50 mph mark you can obtain some serious economy figures.

That's great, but out here you'd get a ticket for going 45 mph on a highway.

I was seeing something like the Clio's mpg with a Peugeot 208 TDI, if i held it at the 50mph mark.
It was interesting to back off the throttle and see it flash up to 250mpg

Into the wind and at 75-80 mph my C got 39mpg.

Best tank has been 61mpg. Short trips downhill in the summer with a warmed up car get in the 90's some times over a couple of miles.

Sure beats my 10mpg V10 Super Duty.

I rent the regular Prius often. I get 45 mpg in normal mixed driving. But, if I slow down, draft trucks and set the cruise, I can achieve spot MPGs that rival what the op indicates. Generally takes 50mph to do that.

Awesome. Although i don't think this would ever happen in the USA. 7 people carpooling, in a prius? I'd sooner believe Obama spends his weekends shooting AR-15s for fun.

It seems Americans would have more need for a 7-seat Prius V than an European..... Americans have bigger families & take long roadtrips for vacation. Sometimes I think carmakers have ridiculous ideas/prejudice about Americans.

"They would never buy a small car like Lupo."
"They won't buy diesel cars."
"They only need 5 seats in a Prius Van."
