Out drained 6 quarts of short tripped fuel laden 0w20 that made my wife comment when she walked into the garage that it stunk,

In went the Havoline 10w30 synthetic. Left the filter in,

I must say and report that I like this box size, he utility and tidiness it provides.
The drained oil fit perfectly in the 6 quart box. I highly recomend this packaging.

The new oil completely empties from the container no complaints.

So for those with 6 quart oil changes this is a great and recommended package. Should be good oil too.

While at my local WM earlier this week I noticed the 6 qt. containers of the PRO DS oil in 5W30 and 10W30. They have it stocked on the very top shelf with all of the other name brand synthetic oils below it. This is why I had never noticed it before. I bet there were about 15 containers of each when I was there. It's priced at $19.99 each.

Why on earth wouldn't you change the filter too?

90% of oil filters in landfills today are not more than half-full.

Probably not. I will do an engine mechanical health check UOA with whatever I am using an interval before the 5 year 60k Powertrain warranty is up of I have no 8ndications of any issues before then. This change was based on time and my wife's short tripping through the winter. There are only 10,200 miles on the 4 runner.

This was a severe service change with low miles on the filter. The filter will get changed at 1 year or 10k miles on it. Basically needed fresh oil not a fresh filter at this point in time. I don't worry about the half quart of residual oil left n the filter canister.

What's that supposed to mean and what does it have to do with the OP not changing the filter during an oil change? I usually pour the oil out of the old filter once or twice, so it may be half-full too, so what?

OK. So you mean the last time you only changed the filter but not the oil?

No, last time was oil and filter change. This time was just a drain and fill. Basically I do 1 year or 10k filter and oil, 5k /6 months, oil only.

Thanks - yeah at only 10k miles it still has break-in material floating around to skew the results. I'm just curious how this oil performs in our 4.0 litres....

edit: And after having a look, could go 5w30 winter and 10w30 summer here in CO...and less expensive than what I'm using (at current prices)

These 1gr fe second generation engines are tolerant of a wide variety of oils other than having an internal timing chain there are not a lot of stressors from this engine. I have had 2 other 4 runners and a 2010 FJ cruiser trail teams (I regret selling it) with the same engine and never had an oil related issue with any of them.

I can't speak for him, but I suggest he means dirt holding capacity, not residual oil. Most oil filters taken off of vehicles (including by me) are nowhere near the end of their service lives. I suppose that's one benefit to the general reduction in filter size. The last thing we really need is to send FL-1A size filters to the dump after one oil change on the average vehicle out there.

Agreed; the overseas manuals even go up to a 15w40 for hot climates.

You said you put in the Havoline synthetic...did you buy at WM? I didn't see it on their website....just the conventional.

Here is where I bought it. Buy two get free shipping.

I'd use the Havoline 6 qrt. synthetic in a PFI injector engine for a 5,000 mile OCI and be happy ... For a GDI engine I would move up to Valvoline , Pennzoil , Mobil 1 or Castrol EDGE due to better base stocks , NOACK , additives , etc.

I'm curious why you would say this. Chevron makes their own base stocks and additives in house. Their products meet all the latest specs.

I have it ready for my next change in the SkyActiv engine. I have no worries about it.

It may go In the Tacoma with the DS4 injected engine next. Not concerned.
