i have 12 quarts of fluid to put in. do i just do a drain and fill (4 quarts), drive around the block, and do that three times? or is starting it up, running it through the gears, and shutting it off, all while its on the ramps, good enough? or should i take off the tranny cooler line and flush it like that? i saw a youtube video of someone doing that by removing the grille and disconnecting the line there...

I've never done a cooler line flush. I've only done and drain and fills or drain and pan drops with filter replacements. Never had a tranny issue.

I would drain 4 Liters/quarts and refill and run that for a year and do it again next year if the fluid is in ok shape. If it's really bad I would change it after a week or so if you drive it a few hundred miles or so.

What is the condition of the current fluid? I'm guessing it currently has Amsoil in the tranny based on your signature?

Probably best to drive it so that different gears are actually engaged and disengaged and the fluid gets mixed in enough. If you simply put it in "D" on the ramps, it's only going to be 1st gear.

Honda has a technical document for doing multiple drains and refills with their transmissions but when using a lift, not ramps. On a lift, you are able to get it to shift gears. I'm sure the same principal applies here.

D/F, and then cooler line - a quart at a time with top up here, never a problem.
Mixing fresh fluid with old is... contamination, unless you have a tranny with very old fluid, then D/F only or you may end up with slipping tranny.

I would drive it for a while between D&R's.....further than "around the block"....maybe an hour between each.
I think that this would do a little extra cleaning.

Ok. Just not true.

Agreed.

Currently the fluid is a nasty mix of Motorcraft Mercon LV and Valvoline Maxlife I installed maybe 20K miles ago. I have a fresh case of the Amsoil ATF on hand. Same for the truck, I haven't actually installed it yet. Jumped the gun with the forum signature a little bit LOL.

the cooler line flush works well if you have a dipstick tube to refill the transmission. I did this and pumped 4 liters out, stopped the engine, refilled 4 liters through the dipstick, started it up and pumped the next 4 liters out, stopped the engine, refilled...3 times until the fluid coming out was clear. Once this is done, I would just do single drain/fills every 30k miles of 4 liters from then on.

So you'll have a mix of Mercon LV, MaxLife, and Amsoil ATF....

WhatI meant to say is the fluid LOOKS nasty. Not that I'm worried about mixing different brands.

When it left the factory? Lol
