66% of car thefts in Milwaukee are Hyundai/Kia.

I doubt it does, unless you have the top trim level then maybe. Go to your local Lowe’s/Home Depot and their key cutting machine will tell you instantly if it has an chip transponder key. I guess it’s possible they use transponder keys on all of them, even though the vehicle doesn’t have the immobilizer equipment?

Unless they are different for the US, yes they do, since the nineties.

On the 13 Sonata, and 09 Elantra that we have, if that alarm is activated, you cant start the engine until you turn off the alarm. But they both have "keys" and none of this push button / wireless key / smart keys or what ever else they are putting into them now.

Here is is what Hyundai says in the manual about the "Anti-Theft System"

Yes, and it was interesting how the elected officials were quick to blame Hyundai for their carjacking/GTA issue. I'll leave it at that.

They do, but the immobiliser is turned off when it sees the wireless signal from the key.
Did you read the attachment I posted? It clearly stated that that immobilizers were NOT AVAILABLE on some of their vehicles, up through MY2021. There is no immobilizer to bypass if the vehicle isn’t equipped with one.

BTW- My dim memories of Milwaukee a half century ago was that it claimed to be "America's safest city". Life under Chief for Life Harold Breier was not as good as he claimed, but I remember cops walking up and down the street pulling on car doors. Unlocked car doors=a ticket. Just heard a presentation by a St. Charles cop on car theft and when I suggested this I was told "we couldn't do that." Since he stated that well over nine in ten car thefts were from unlocked cars, I'm not sure why not. He also stated that many don't lock their car to avoid glass breaking, so maybe there's no way out of this.

Hyundai gives the USA market SMIT. The new Kona N USA model gets UGLY heavy cast rims, Europe get light NICE looking forged rims. The USA market gets no steering wheel heater on most models, Europe/Canada gets them. Hyundai CHEAPSKATES out on the new Kona N only 2WD and makes it a "lifted" street racer with a horrible roll center. Any of the "good" youtube review catch how horrible the high roll center "cripples" the Kona N handling. Hyundai failed in so many areas on the new Kona N. 1/3 of the commenters say they don't want the 2WD version. A simple $1,400 option that would sell more then twice the cars, and Hyundai trips again on being cheapskates.

Wow - I thought chip keys were pretty much standard on everything since the late 90's early 2000's.
No chips on my 05 escalade or yukon xl slt 06 model years. Ace hardware $3 key for the win but please dont steal me bro.

GM does have a device in the lock cylinder which is designed to break and disable the engine if someone forces it without the key.

this simply isn't a problem in Canada, for all vehicles including Kia and Hyundai

Anti-Theft Solutions

Standard 114 of Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Act was implemented in November of 2007 to enhance the security of cars, thereby reducing theft. Factory installed immobilizers were and still are the mandate for all vehicles entering Canada. All manufacturers have complied.

it's interesting that some right-wing thinking people label Canada as "socialist" and "liberal" because of our consumer protection laws; they would argue that the laws "stifle competition" and that "the market will regulate itself"

ten years later on a car sold in Canada has an immobilizer and is incredibly difficult to steal unless you use a tow truck, in the US kids with USB cables are starting cars and driving away

in reality these laws save lives, money and headaches for car owners

simply not true, immobilizers were available for all car models sold in Canada, Kia/Hyundia consciously chose NOT to install them on cars sold in the US, a "business decision"

the "security kit" now being offered by Hyundia/Kia as a costly upgrade is the immobilizer system that was legally mandatory since 2007 in Canada

I can't wait to see the part # and total kit
I've done some 12v work in my time, some of it still makes me shudder
So many "Factory Certified" dealer or port installed Code Alarm Powercode remote start+alarm+keyless systems 🤮
So many Windstars wouldn't start because of the POS PATS bypass 🙄
The Audiovox ones on SET/GST distributed Toyota products
Or the VIP3000/3200 systems on an old clapped out Camry or Corolla 😳
Every shady Honda dealer pre installed KARR brand alarms, and they suck so badly 😒
They should've kept immobilization, shame on them for cheaping out

Thats crazy since GM pretty much pioneered the chip key back in the mid-90's - thought it was in everything. I had to help a friend with bypassing the system in a mid-late 90's Suburban/Yukon/Tahoe - it was some work and took time but a few bits from RadioShack but he ended up with a running GMT410 that was bricked for a few months because of a failed PassKey system.

A vehicle is worth 3 times more in parts than it is complete.
And let that be a warning if you think too much about modding your old vehicle. You mod an old vehicle, have some fun for a while, then when it's time to remove the engine and "may as well" replace various other parts while they are easier to get to, your practical side kicks in and you wind up selling it all for parts. And then you drive your more reliable but boring vehicles and feel sad.

Brings back some memories of growing up in the area...
Yeah. Milwaukee is the armpit of Wisconsin. Basically, there's Milwaukee, and then the rest of the state.

There's an easy way out of it. But they won't do it.

Weird. My 2005 Cobalt had a chip key, as did all my 90’s W body and 4th Gen F body Camaros.
