I'm struggling to understand why anyone would expect an LED lamp at $1/ea to last more than a few years at best?

folks buy whats cheapest and hope for the best?
even ones that dont fail outright have bad lumen depreciation.they dim out.
those ebay 100w modules are famous for that.most are garbage from the start.
likely built with floor sweepings.

I've got over 1500 hours on my 100w cheap LEDs. Still going strong.

do you have any unused units to use as a control?
it takes a doubling or halving of lumens for most to notice the loss/gain.
it happens so gradually most dont notice till they are nearly dead.
very few are of any kind of quality.
i have some high cri units from yuji led that are doing well.but they are a class of their own.not cheap.
i wound up with 4 of the motion sensing 30w outdoor floods that faded to nothing in a year.neighbor was going to toss them.
i put in 3 luxeon altilon 1x4 modules in each.the drivers were decent.rubycon caps, decent heatsink when bolted to the housing.
i am using 2 now.he is using the other 2.
doubled the light output.this would not be economical to do if i hadnt gotten the leds from a surplus deal.
they are $40 each in 1-10 qty if you can buy them anywhere.and future could not get them.
they make nice desk lamps with the old lamps that have a transformer in the base.700ma mr16 driver ,bridge, and a filter cap.
lga775 cpu sink even the thin lightweight ones work fine.
looks a bit odd but everyone i made one for loves them.

I find in enclosed fixtures led bulbs burn themselves up. With ventilation they seem to last fine as they generate a lot of heat at base.

LEDs abd CFLs struggle in home lighting areas where attached ceiling fans exist also. Any kind of blade wiggle and/or vibration favors the old-school incandescent lighting.

Yes, the price drop in the last 2 years has been pretty noticeable, but I also wonder how much of this is electric utility sponsorship.

Yup. It's cheaper to buy a 60- and a 40- watt LED, and a "Y" adapter, than to just buy the unsubsidized 100 watter.

Makes for interesting lighting planning in new construction, which can be better, by having two fixtures a few feet apart in the ceiling vs one central one, with two bulbs together totalling desired lumens, and less harsh shadows.

Thanks for that suggestion, eljefino. I got a 100W equivalent on sale at Target to replace a Cree 60W in a living room lamp. The brighter bulb really makes a difference, but instead of getting another one, I found a Y adapter and put two 60W Crees in the other lamp. Works perfectly.

No subsidies here, but I did get a few of the coated glass Cree bulbs on closeout at Home Depot. I now have a few more bulbs than fixtures that will take them. My rented house has three rooms of the stupid candelabra-size fixtures.
