I'm am now past 105k, if the belt breaks the replacement belt(+ engine) will not be covered by the warranty. I was quoted $600+ by the Volvo dealership for replacement of just the timing belt, and $900+ for replacement of timing belt in addition to all belts and pulleys. Is this a fair shake? They say it's a 6-7hr job...but i'm suspicious, it's just a belt that's accessible by removing the power steering and coolant resevoirs isnt it?

I've seen my mechanic change the TB/WP on an older Volvo in 15 minutes. Find an Indy or DIY. BOSCH Service Centers are likely better then the dealership. Find one.

I assume we are talking white (Al block) motor?

Price seems high. Timing belt is a bit tricky, but a competent Volvo place should be under $400 including the easy accessory belt. (Why replace the pulleys?)

If it's a red block, do it yourself.

You didn't say which model but to change the timing belt on either my 87 745 or the 97 960 is around $200-$225 at my dealer. My local indy mechanic does it for half of that.
Check FCPGroton http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo.htm
for parts they are a whole lot cheaper than the dealer.

sorry....2000 Volvo V70 XC AWD Wagon

the problem with providing the parts is that everytime i've tried to save money by buying THE SAME PARTS THEY WOULD USE ANYWAY, they refuse to offer any kind of warranty on the repair.

Also let me add that my dealer at least on the 960 I6 24V recommends that you replace the tensioner and pulley at the same time you do the belt. They have had a few of these parts disintegrate and come apart a few thousand miles after the belt was changed. You don't even want to know what a rebuilt head is going to cost you if that belt snaps. Lets see at the going rate of M1 at Walmart that works out to a minimum of 120 5 quart jugs.
