I just purchased a 2013 Ford f250 with the 6.7 Power Stroke deisel. Other than the factory MC oil what other brands should I consider? Only at 1800 miles right now. Would like to run full synthetic as I always have with previous gas engines. Im new to the diesel world and would love to hear everyones opinions.

I live in North Carolina and drive a 50/50 mix of city and highway. Will tow a 22 foot boat during the Summer months. Only about an hour and a half to the lake so not too long of a trip.

Thanks,

Matt

Since you can't run extended intervals there really isn't any point paying more for a synthetic just to drain it at the same mileage that a conventional can easily go.
First off I would buy the franz toilet paper bypass filter system off eBay,or the amsoil one. If I ever buy a new vehicle I will be installing one.
As for your truck I would use whatever conventional that meets the spec and change it at fords required mileage, then once out of warranty you can either extend the mileage and use a syn or stay with a conventional.
I suggest messaging dnewton.
He has tons of data on this topic and can give you a realists suggestion based on actual data, not the standard"it works for me" type deal.
Hopefully he will see this and post.

Matt, check to see what the manual says about oil certification ratings then go after a brand that meets those ratings. Rotella T6, Amsoil, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck.. I may be mistaken but I believe the 6.7 uses a 10w30 which makes it slightly more difficult to find a diesel synthetic oil

It calls for 10W30 for most conditions, but allows for 5W40 for synthetic.

Rotella makes a conventional 10w30,and they also have a semi-syn called t-5 that can be found in various grades including a 10w30.
I know Amsoil makes a 10w30 diesel oil but since extending the interval may put warranty in jeopardy there really isn't much point in spending more, only to have to change the oil long before its spent.
OP
You might be best off just using the motorcraft oil specified by ford. It's easy to find, its of very good quality and was formulated for that particular engine,so it could just be the best oil for this application.
But seriously consider a bypass system.
My friend has had the toilet paper roll kind on every cummins he's owned for the past 20 years. He changes his oil every 100000 miles or so however he changes the full flow every 5000 and the TP every 10000 iirc. Then tops up the oil. He gets uoa done every 20k and his insols are always at 0. Iirc his condemnation limit is 100ppm iron and that takes 100000 miles to get to that point.
I am a firm believer in those toilet paper roll by-pass systems. The idea and application just works great, and the filters sure are cheap.
Oil filtration in a diesel has the greatest effect on wear since whatever gets by the air filter has to be filtered out by the oil filter.
And if the toilet paper filter doesn't appeal to you look at the Amsoil units. A member here tried to build his own by-pass system and by the time he factored in the cost of parts(no time or fuel to amass said parts) the Amsoil system only cost a few bucks more however once you factor in his time and effort and fuel to buy all the stuff the Amsoil system comes out way cheaper. And it's Amsoil so you know its top quality.
Anyways congrats on the truck.

There is a difference between what Ford "requires" and "recommends".
They require a CJ-4 rated lube. The recommend a 10w30 or 5w-40, but other reasonable grades such as 15w40 or 10w-40 would also work fine.

If you are going to follow OEM IOLM OCIs, then syns are a total waste. I have had excellent service from Rotella conventional 10w30; I was as brutal to my oil as you could ever imagine and yet get great used oil analysis.. Others have had great service from Deere's 10w30. There is no "need" for syns, even with your described towing. Both Shell and Mystik has nice 10w30 semi-syn that you can find easily at Walmart or farm supply stores.

I have a '12 6.7 Powerstroke and decided to go with Rotella T6 Synthetic 5W-40 oil. My reason for choosing this oil was based on Fords Owners Guide Supplement that states "For severe duty usage, use SAE 5W-40 API CJ-4." and For biodiesel (grades B6-B20) usage, use SAE 5W-40 or SAE 15w40 API CJ4." A 10w30 follows under a normal usage catagory.

My advice is to review Fords manual and decide if you fall into the severe duty or not and the "Expected Temperature Range" chart and make a informed decision on the type of oil your truck requires.

The OLM if you choose to follow runs the oil to ~ 7,500 miles.

Good luck...

I think Im going to run the T6, all I have ever used is synth. I guess I am just one of those people that enjoys some extra peace of mind (probably just percieved) from running a fully synthetic oil. Not sure if I will be able to go 7500 miles either... I tend to over maintain all of my vehicles, [censored] I even over maintain my lawn mower...

One more thing, is there any benefit to doing the first oil change early? Im at 2200 miles right now and have been thinking about doing the first change and putting T6 in it.

In reference to a early oil change, my neighbor who is a Ford mechanic , changed his filter only at 1000 miles added oil, then went to the regular change interval, changed both oil an filter.
He used MC oil an was not happy with oil usage, switched to Mystik semi-synthetic still a 10w30 an now reports no added oil between changes.
Think he said it has 45,000 miles on his truck now.
He will wait till the warranty is up before he does the EGR/DPF delete.

As long as you realize it's an emotional response and not a logical one, there is nothing wrong with that.

There is already "peace of mind" in today's oils, especially if you change oil more often than necessary. To change oil before the IOLM, and use syn on top of that, is waste heaped upon waste.

But if that is what it takes for you to sleep well at night, so be it.

Enjoy your new truck.

I did my first oil change at 3,500 miles with T6 and a new Motorcraft filter.

I havn't seen any data to suggest an early oil change is beneficial, but I can say the used factory oil looked worse at 3.5k miles than the T6 at 7k miles.
