6.5hp B&S smoking on startup

I currently have a Troy Bilt push mower with a 6.5hp B&S that is just over a year old. I have noticed that when I start the mower after it's been sitting for more than two weeks I get alot of smoke which I believe to be burning oil. Is this normal? I'm currently running Royal Purple SAE 30.

It's likely just a valve seal leaking just a little when the mower is being pushed around before start up. If it runs good don't give it a second thought. I have an old 1972 Western Auto mower that blows perfect smoke rings when it's started up fron cold.

How long does it smoke when you start it? I have a toro with a 6.5hp B&S. It smokes for the first 3 seconds or so and it goes away but I always thought it was from an inefficient cold burn on startup. Is the oil level going down on the dipstick at all?

This is going to sound like an "old wife's tale," but, at the risk of being laughed at, I'm going to relate my experience anyway:
My 20 HP Kohler Command used to smoke a lot at start-up...for about 2 or 3 seconds. I was using Pennzoil Conventional 10w30. I changed the oil and went with Mobil 1 5W-40 and the engine smokes very, very little (perhaps a second) at start-up. I also found the engine runs a lot smoother on the synthetic. Although you didn't mention it, I'll bet that B & S 6.5 is a smooth runner on the RP 30 wt.

I have a troy built 6.5 B&S motor. smokes on start up after 1 week of sitting. I use GC 0w-30. engine runs really smooth on this stuff. it was like having a brand new motor. well it runs better than new lol. I would only worry if it always smokes after that inital start up.


wouldnt a thicker oil burn less. I heard people doing this on vehicles that was oil burners or leaked oil. so I guess its true.

My 7 year old 6.75 HP Tecumseh mower engine puts out a bit of blue smoke on startup, but it goes away in like 3 or 4 seconds. The crank case is slightly overfilled because I mow a lot on slopes. I probably have a wee bit of oil seeping by the rings or the valve stem seals when it's shut down, and it gets burned off on startup. No biggie, after it has run for a few seconds, the smoke stops and it runs fine from then on. It does not seem to be burning much oil, the crankcase level does not drop much between oil changes. I run Delo 400 15w40 in the thing.

When I was away a work our lawn mower smoked on start up.
Turns out that she put it on a bit of an angle when putting it into the shed because it is a small shed.
Not that this is your case but just an idea.

My 3.5 hp Briggs smokes during the first 2 seconds of startup... its 13 years old.
