5w30 synthetics 5.4L 3v 2004 engines

I am new here, but I would like to fine out if 5w30 Amsoil would work well in my 5.4L 3V just as well or better then Fords 5w20 oil. I ran my 1999, 5.4L with 5w30 for over 100,000 miles and they were hard miles. Has Ford don't something to the 5.4L to chang oil weight? I have very happy with my 5w30 from Amsoil.

should work just fine. The only reason I believe they went to the 5w-20 was to be able to make milage mandates set by the government. Not to knock Amsoil at all, but the Motorcaft 5w-20 is a semi-syn and has got some very good reviews here. Also at $1.77 a quart it's a good deal. Just my opinion. By the way

Don't know about the specs. regarding the new 3V 5.4L.

I'd stick with the factory spec.d oil until we hash out what the truth is about the 5W20 viscocity. I am not convinced that 5W20 was concieved with just CAFE concerns in mind.

Your engine is different from all the other 5.4Ls out there, so do some research, and if you find something please post.

I just switched back to Red Line 5W20 from using their 5W30, because of concerns regarding teh proper lubrication of my 03 4.6L GT engine.

I'm with mf150. Run the 5w-20 at least during your warranty period. The Motorcraft 5w-20 has yet to produce a bad UOA report here. Every single report has been good to excellent. One or two of them were under some pretty tough conditions with heavy tow loads in high heat areas.

The Pennzoil 5w-20 seems to be a very good choice also.

The amsoil 5w30 is a lot thicker than the Mobil 1 5w30. If your dire need is go with a synthetic and you are worried about warranty conditions, go with a Mobil 1 5w30, it's actually a thick 20 weight oil. This year the 5.4 was totally redesigned, at least from the block up. Don't know about the tolerances and clearances on the rods and crankshaft. In the past, Mobil 1 5w30 and Mobil 1 10w30 have been use extensively in these engines and have held up well. The modualar design has meant very little lead and engine wear from what I've gathered studying used oil analysis.

The 5w30 will work well. Thick, thin or otherwise, the 5w30 will give better protection in the hot or cold than the 5w20. As far as operating viscosity, what are we talking about a few centistoke, it's not like you going up to a 40 or 50wt.

If you like the 5w30 run it and sleep well at night.

BTW do we have any analysis on the 5w20 after 5,000 miles. I have a $100 bill that says it will be at least a mid 30wt by that time.

Whereas the 5w30 might start out a little thicker but will stay closer to grade than the 5w20. JMHO

You'll get your wish for a a 5000+ mile 5w20 fill. I just changed the oil yesterday in my '99 F150 with 4.6l V8 with just over 6000 miles on it. The viscosity was holding its own on the last 5,000 mile run. Still want that $100 bill on the line?

As far as the new 3v 5.4, I'd be inclined to stick with the 5w20 during the warranty. I'm not sure how much of a redesign went into the new 3v motor, so I won't give the blanket statement that since it is the same as the previous motors, 5w30 would be fine.

Really hasn't been reason not to use the 5w20 yet, that I've seen anyways!
