5w30 or 5w20

Hello everyone, and was reading some on the 5w20 failures do occur posting, and wondering if I would be fine running 5w30 instead of 5w20 I am currently running. My 03' Civic with 117k on the odometer does not use or leak any oil at all. Honestly I was thinking of using 5w30 sometime in the future.

LOL! statistically-speaking, how many satisfied/unaware automobile joes out there who own/operate 5W20 equipped vehicles for years (or over a decade) w/o any incident?, mabe a hundred for hundreds of thousands of 5W20 equipped vehicles running in NA?

I'm one of them (got 2 hondas that spec'ed 5W20 and running on them , esp. dad's car whose been on 5W20 for over 11 yrs now and still going like a new engine) who doesn't care about complaining. Afterall: to me 5W20 is just like 5W30 of the yesteryear.

Lastly: Only those who are having issues/unhappy about it would come out and complain about it, incl. but not limited to BITOG. So, tell me ole pal, how does that make you feel? Are you gonna lose sleep over the bickering between 5W30 vs 5W20, only to realise that 5W30 will pretty much shear down to 20weight (when hot) after a couple of thousands of miles?

Also: the way I see it: 10W30 will become obsolete in less than 10 yrs or so in North America; and 5W30 will become what it used to be (the norm) in 10W30 a couple of decades ago.

5W20, 0W20 or 0W30 will become a norm for many vehicles.

I had a '96 Ford Windstar with the 3.8L motor.
Original specification was for 5w30 oil.
FORD issued a TSB stating that 5W-20 was prefered.
I switched to using 5W-20 oil.....and was still using it when I sold it last spring, 2010, with over 229K miles on it.
It was still running just great.....no oil issue.

As you stated, you are having no issue......so I would continue using what is called for, and what you have been doing and not worry about it at all.
 
This is an interesting thread. My Dad was asking me if he should ditch the 5/20 in his car and put in 5/30. Do I think 5w30 is going by by? No. 10/30 Might. But not 5/30. Also, if you have gone over 100K on 5/20 and just now are wondering if you should switch? I then wouldn't worry about it. If anything would have gone wrong with that 5/20 it would have by now.

Remember folks the 5/20 is for MPG's, not really for durability. I would argue that putting in a 5w30 would cost you that much in MPG's and the added HTHS during stressful times (depending on where you live) may be cheap insurance IMO.

My Dad's car is still relitively new. We live in the hotest climate in the USA where temps can get up to 130F in the summer. I think running a 5w30 in THOSE conditions is a good idear IMO.

My Final say to my Dad, Run RL 5/20, and get the best of both worlds. So he's going to try it out next oil change.

Rest-easy folks: today's 5W20 is much better than 5W30. If you look at most UOA reports on BITOG that came back from various different 5W20 users sofar: this oil grade is holding up extremely well under all kinds of situations, and in Ford's case: they even tested it in death valley, most of their gasoline pickup truck engines, etc.

Those the came reporting issues related to the use of 5W20 (engine failures, etc.) are the ones that may have some other associated mechanical issues that would have directly caused their problem or exacerbated the problems further (like adding engine aftermarket "bolt-on" for added power increase, engine modifications of all kinds w/o properly doing a blueprinting of that engine afterwards to determine the proper oil viscosity suitable for their loads/operations, etc.

Also: most avg joes out there would take on any casual blames/accusations of oil being the culprit; and the consipracy theorists will throw in their bones telling you that this use of "thinner" viscosity oil is all about EPA and fuel economy, etc.

To me, 5W20 is all about engine's technological development and progress, meaning that with modern engine manufacturing, etc. they can now go where no engine can go (compared to the days of yore), meaning that they can extract more horsepower output out of a given engine design, be able to precisely control the engine output/emissions, etc. via close looped computer management systems, computer to take full control over the idling, etc. (so that one can run on various different grades of fuel and the computer will be able to auto-adjust the ignition timing, etc.)

My biggest pet-peeve is the calling of conventional motor oil as conventional oil for there's no more dino in modern automobile engine oils than back in pre API SA days or even earlier. Why? In order to stay in grade (resist shearing), combat fuel dilution, handles a much wider operating temperature range, etc. most modern "conventional" oils are a blend of group 2 or higher to achieve the kind of base oil that would meet the demands of modern hotter, longer running engines. In other words: most "conventional" grade motor oil are by no means sloch in this case, citing that they are at least grade II+ or better (in the form of base oil blends) in order to satisfy modern engine manufacturer's stringent requirements.

So, why fuss over 5W30 or 5W20? Many countries (like Mid-east, se-asian countries, etc.) wherre they had to use higher viscosity motor oil in their gasoline engines due to (a) that's where diesel engine oils are most popular; and (b) they tend to shear out of weight far greater (in the case of Malaysia, Indonesia and Kuwait, domestic oil makes) and sooner than what you typically get off the shelves here in North America.

I can sure rest easy tonite, knowing full well that dad's 7th gen civic (engine already clocked over 163kkms to date on 5W20, with lots of stop-n-go traffic in between) and my Honda fit will make the miles and the body shall rot long before the engines will die from lubricant-related failures.

Same applies to my friend's 08 F150(he's an automobile ideiot BTW), factory maintained with 5W20 sticker all over it which also calls for regular duty on hauling his 8000lbs trailer to their campsite several times up the snoqualmie pass....

Having tested the 30 vs 20 weight oils in my 07 Civic EX i did find that 5w30 produced the same wear numbers as the 20 weight, even after a longer oil run.

I'm still waiting to go back to a 20 weight and run a 10k interval to finalize my experiment and finding.

Having said that, i'd recommend 5w30 in the summer (if you live in a very hot climate) and use the 20 weight for the winter, for faster warm ups and better flow.

It might only mean a difference of 1/2 MPG, but multiply that by millions of vehicles and we can reduce dependence. I will say a neighbor of mine blew up his engine on a Silverado with only 30,000 miles on it. He was pulling a 8500 pound trailer for about 3000 miles but the weather was in the mid 50's, so I doubt it was the oil. As a die hard Chevy fan he contends it was the oil. He was within the OCI
 
Thanks guys for the replies and looks like I am sticking to 5w20 since I am havin no issues with it. Probably use Pennzoil conventional next oil change in about 4500 miles or so.

Hi.

@ quest...please keep in mind that just because a 5W-20 supposedly protects most engines just as well as a 5w30, does not mean it protects every engine.

An oil is specified within the manufacturer's limits. Things like the usable life of the vehicle, fuel economy, wear protection, etc. are all factors when a manufacturer specifies an oil. This is done through extensive testing over the years, on the streets and in the labs. Statistics are added up, and if things fall within range, then an oil specification will be released.

For example, there are some cases where the same engine of several years ago is specified with a lower viscosity oil in the present day.

Basically, the manufacturer has done the testing to conclude that it would be safe to do so.

However, a chemist will always revert back to the molecular structure and bonds between the molecules to examine an oil's capabilities and limits. And there is a simple fact that presents itself each time oils are tested; higher viscosity oils still retain higher film strength at higher temperatures.

Now, the question becomes...will the engine experience those limits? If the answer is 90% no, then it is logical to specify a lower viscosity oil. This way, the manufacturer can achieve minor fuel economy improvements and avoid costly testing to redevelop the engine.

It is good that many engines last 100,000+ miles when they are specified with 5W-20 oils. That shows not only how "good" the lubricant is, but also the engine operating environment.

In motorsports, we rarely use a high viscosity oil unless we are after durability. Usually, we throw in something around 0W-5W oils simply because there is less fluid drag, allowing the engine to maximize power. This is incredibly important if the rules regulate the car's weight, engine design, and aerodynamics. We need every advantage. However, what this also means is less durability. We rebuild everything after the race. To quote Mr. Porsche, the perfect race car crosses the finish line first and then falls to pieces.

However, most consumers don't have this in their objectives. My opinion may be moot, but I still believe that a higher viscosity oil still provides higher film strength at higher temperatures, relative to a lower viscosity oil. It's just fluid mechanics in action.

This also does not means that a higher viscosity oil is a wonder oil. It too has its limits, and that's also why we see engines fail. Now if that's the case, what would happen if we used a lower viscosity oil in the engine?

To recap, a fluid is specified within a limit. However, 95% of the reason why manufacturers have specified lower viscosity oils is because of the fuel economy benefits; they can market this both to the federal government and to the consumer. 95% of the people that go in to buy the car, see the the window sticker rather than the viscosity recommendation on the oil cap.

And if the manufacturer expects the car to last a certain amount of time, within a certain amount of mileage, then it would be logical to specify fluids accordingly.

i believe 5w30 is a good idea in high mileage engines. clearances grow over time and a thicker oil takes up slack, its that simple.
 
Very well written post by dtt004. I agree that and it is basically fact that the 5w20 IS for CAFE. I would use 5w30 w/o hesitation. I would and do use 0w30 also. Just use a quality oil and you will be fine 0w20-10w30. There are pros and cons of each.
 
I vote for 5w30. I don't think there is much evidence one is better than the other in normal operating conditions, especially in a northern climate like the op, except for a very marginal economy gain with 5w20. I just feel better using in in my wife's 08 Mazda 3 here in Fl with the 5+ months of 95 degree weather coming in a month. IMO you have absolutely no margin for mechanical problems/overheating.

Off Topic: As we speak I just finished up a 7380mi 5w30SM FS/Motorcraft 400s service. And just serviced same but SN flavor. Planning do ing used oil analysis for a sm vs sn comparison.

Since I have no problems, think I will be just fine using Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 honestly or should I use Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 at next oil change at 120k?

Use whatever makes "you" happy-really I am surprised about how many people get on here and ask the opinion of people they dont know and never met. They could be "That guy" and you dont even know it and you are taking their advice. I like this site to hear about peoples experiences with different products and ideas. Plus I did get some Great tips on here for some problems. Just remmember what you get is peoples opinions, although some of them are pretty hardcore about it. My opinion, 5w20, 5w30 or 10w30 wont make a hill of beans. You are splitting hairs. I would use 5w20 and if it uses oil, I would keep going up, till it stopped. I have used 5w20, 5w30 and 10w30 in my wifes car as well as my truck, both speced for 5w20 and know what. I could not tell any difference at all, at start up, running or gas milelage. I am from Pennsylvania, so dont say, oh, its cause you are in Florida, I always wasnt. Use whatever.

I too have an '03 Civic EX and I've been running, let's see, Mobil 1 5w-20, 0w-20, Red Line 5w-20, currently Red Line Ow-20 and next weekend I'll switch back to Red Line 5w-20.

This is yearly oil changes and blasting around in the hot SoCal summers with trips to Palm Springs.

No oil consumption at all. Use 5w-20 with confidence and sleep like a baby at night. BTW, if you have a 5 speed try using Red Line MTL in the transmission. It makes it shift like butter and a lot of Honda/Acura owners swear by this stuff.
 
Thanks for the replies guys and Panzerman, where in PA did you come from? I was born and raised in Punxsutawney area. Yeah, probably just use Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 next oil change.

I am so fortunate...I live in a region that averages 40 degrees in the winter and 72 degrees in the summer, i.e. the PERFECT climate for following the manuafacturer's recommendation to use 5W20 oil. Not too cold, not too hot and we don't have to put up with salt on the roads either.

I feel for y'all living in seasonal extremes...our only local concern is 'THE BIG ONE' that will someday strike our regional subduction zone in the future.
 
My 2001 Civic, just like yours, ran 5w20 for its first 30k, then went to Amsoil 0w30k for the next 80k, then went back to only 5w20 until I sold it at 227k running perfectly. Use what is called for. Oil companies have enough problem press. If engines were failing on 5w20 they'd be 10 years in now and someone would have blown the proverbial whistle by now.
