Unexplained Oil Acronym
Sorry...I don't. The graphic I posted is in reference to the allowable oil viscosities for my Subaru Impreza WRX STi, and xW-20 oils are not spec'd for this engine.
Important question so I made a post in the used oil analysis forum which was moved. So far no one has reported any oil that's sheared to the bottom of the 20wt scale.
Just go with the 5w30 and be done with it. It may or may not help with the noise, but will certainly not hurt your car. Nothing ventured nothing gained...
The car now has 12K miles in 5-1/2 months since purchased new. I've noticed that the engine is quieter. It sat at the dealer's lot for over a year and had a grand total of 64 miles on it when I picked it up in March. It was suggested in another forum that corrosion may have built up on the engine pullies which may have contributed to some of the noise. Anyway, the noise level is approaching my 03 CV Sport's which doesn't amount to much. Maybe the engine has finally "broken in"....?
I'll try the 5W30 this weekend when I change the oil.
I made the leap yesterday...made the decision to use 5w20 but Mobil 1 Full Synthetic this time. It really galled me to pay $6/qt however. If I do not feel/hear any significant difference over the next 4k miles, I will go back to MC.
I couldn't bring myself to use 5w30. The "5w20" stamped on the oil cap and the words of a Ford dealer service rep, "Trust the Ford engineers on this one" kept ringing in my mind. So 5w20 it will be.

5w-20! I have been running 5w-20 in my ride (See below) for almost 36000 miles now and it runs real good with it.
Although it will be tough decision not to followup with a 2nd OCI with M1, I would go back to MC too and infact, with Fall approaching, I am contemplating doing just that. I need my 345 miles to Low fuel and 400 miles per tank on a V6!! The only worry is varnish but who cares if you gonna save money, right?!

Why do you think MC 5W-20 will give you varnish?
I guess the predicted shear will be greater and the two grades will end up closer.
Did I miss the do an Auto R/X treatment X 2 for the miles.I think the Auto R/X works well .
