..and ..I agree with just about all of Bill's points. It's a blind faith belief that all M1's are create equal in all terms that we "want to believe" (cleaning and whatever else one would anoint them with oil ..so to speak).


Gary, I will add that the AMSOIL ASL 5w30 didn't leave anything in the filter either.

This is the ONLY oil that has EVER left ANYTHING in the filter on this vehicle. And the only oil ever to get this dirty.

Though from my experience with MY truck, the 5w40 seems to do it too (disrupt/remove this carbon). Though of course, my 1st Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck run was directly following my 5w20 run......

And remember the "up to 46%" is on a SEVERE SLUDGE cleanup test.

Most (like 99.99998% of the engines out there) do NOT have severe sludge.

That is why all this clean up MARKETING from Mobil, Pennzoil, Castrol and such is just "sucker come buy me" for the masses.

- Well, at least I'm not the only one in world having to work hard to keep my engines alive on "fuel conserving" oils. And I have the most faith in FORD running 20wt over anyone.

- My Toyota is starting to get real noisy in the valvtrain on the castrol syntec. IDK whassup. I give up ... ..... ... Oh, shoot, maybe I'll take one last shot and change the filter in case its loaded - it's had startup racket since the oci and may have a bad ADBV (WIX).
-I would never use a lighter weight running viscosity no matter what the cafe gods want me to do. Nonsensical.

Just to update:

The truck has now made the 1,528Km journey back to my parent's place down east. I has not made any noise since this one episode. And has sat overnight a couple of times now.

Dad has noted that the engine sounds noticeably quieter overall with the 0w40, and he is pleased.

Indeed. They have become my "one-two punch" so to speak. I use Mobil 1 0w40 in a dropper for my furnace motor and to reincarnate computer fans. I also use it for bicycle chain lube.

Will be interesting to see the inside of this next filter off mom and dad's truck.....

Are you still planning on a run of the thinner Redline for the winter? You've had such success on the Mobil 1 it's almost a shame to change now.

Well, Doug has suggested the Mobil 1 0w40, since he said it shares a LOT in common with the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck and I would have no issue switching back and forth. Since it is readily available and much less expensive, that is probably the route I will go.

I imagine the 5w40 wouldn't be THAT bad for the winter, but the 0w40 is a known quantity here, having used it before over the winter in the Lincoln and the results were fantastic.
