Just bought 5w40 SL synthetic for the jeep (80k miles). The manual says 10w30, any API class, but I want synthetic for winter and there are no synthetic 10w30 at all here and the 5w30 is overspeced, hard to find an pricey. 5w40 synth is common.
Will the slightly thicker oil be noticeable in any way? This is an old design engine...

Shouldn't be an issue, but if you could find a 5w40 that's relativity thin (for a 40wt), that would be ideal.
UOA results tend to show high iron results for that engine, so most change at 5000 miles (8000 km).

A 5w40 will probably work really well for you. Is there a reason you need it (towing) or just want to run a thicker oil? Either way a 5w40 PCMO/HDEO will not hurt your engine.
Going by the UOA section, a lot of those Jeeps seem to do better on 40 weights anyway.
I have been running 5-40 Shell Rotella Synthetic in a 98 Jeep Wraingler with an I6 for three years now. Same oil for three years but very low miles each year. Runs great with not problems.

a great choice. I've used that in my jeep engines for years (the 4.0L and 3.7L) Personally I use Amsoil...
The 5w40 is a great choice for that Jeep. They are not that picky about oil anyway.
Mines had SAE30,40,5w30,10w30,10w40,15w40,0w40 and 20w50. Now @ 130,000 miles and running fine.
