5W-30 too thin?

Here in Los Angeles the gas price is so high again I can't hold back from saying why is our government not doing anything?

Back in 1989 a 10w30 oil sheered down to a 5w-20 before you left your driveway. Todays xw-20 oils are far more sheer stable.

Even when a 5w30 thins down to a 20 weight at 100c, remember it won't perform the same as a true 5w20 will. Most 5w30s have a 40c viscosity of around 60cst, while most 5w20s are closer to 46-50cst. So you will get slightly better MPG (especially on short trippers) with a 5w20 compared to a 5w30, even once the 5w30 thins out at 100c. Another thing to remember is that while the 5w30 is thinning out below 9.3 cst at 100c (making it a 20 wt) it's also probably thickening up at the low end too, so it's new 40c viscosity could be closer to 65-70cst now.

What oils are you comparing? A quality synthetic (or blend) 5w30 will not thin out more than any 5W-20.

Bar1 is correct. What I think this poster was referring to was the non-synthetic pre-SM rated 5w30 oils, which tended to shear down farily quickly.

I don't think you will see a noticeable difference though there should be some even if virtually undetectable.Unless 5w20 is recommended you are on your own....Also what is the government to do. Noboby owes you cheap gas,I don't like high priced gas. The government basically screws you over and you don't know it .Do you have any clue how much you pay is taxes? fees? Any clue on the taxes you pay on gas ?What about all the $$$ you pay to repair Iraq? besides the oil companies are the part owners of our politicians. sorry to vent. P.S. why did you not consider the mpgs when you purchased the Durango? I am trying to be realistic.
