My boss has a '10 Explorer, and although not really a car guy, he's very open to learning new things.

He has the car serviced by the dealer, who uses Middle Eastern sourced Castrol GTX 10w30. The oil "meets the requirements of API SL" and has no ILSAC accreditation. We had a discussion about this over a year ago, and he made [censored] sure they used Motorcraft Syn Blend 10w30 every time, which is what Ford recommends in this part of the world.

Had another discussion with him the other night about motor oil, and he got curious, so it went on for almost four hours. At the end of it, he asked me "Why can't we use a 5w30 meeting ACEA A3/B4 for the higher HTHS viscosity?"

Had a word with the service manager, who said we can supply our own oil. But to spice things up a bit, we contacted Ford Middle East/North Africa, asking if it would satisfy warranty requirements. Will be interesting to hear back from them.

Thanks for the input! We tend to follow the oil life monitor, but I haven't really paid much attention to how long the intervals are.

On another note, gotta love Middle Eastern hospitality when it comes to (non-existent) customer service. Typical of Ford MENA not to reply. They're too busy counting how many pingpong balls fit into the new Escape on their Facebook page.

To be honest I don't think I need it in my Mercury or Mitsubishi either, but with elevated cylinder head temperatures of 216+ degrees and continuous high speed driving, a higher HTHS makes me feel better and the used oil analysis results appear to be very decent:

Aluminum: 2
Chromium: 1
Iron: 12
Copper: 5
Lead: 20

This was over 3,396 miles in the Ford 4.6.
